So I thought my ball joints were bad on my 1G so I finally got around to replacing them and I just bought cheap advanced auto one, got them stuck them in and the whole ball joint assemebly moves with in the lower control arm? Even the old ball joints (which now looking at them arent bad) move with in the control arm. Now I dont feel like finding new control arms,or spending the money on them, as this is just my daily beater, so would it be bad if I just weld the lower ball joints in? This car doesnt see very many miles a month, so I figure if they last 10 years (if I have the car that long) would that work? Plus if I had to replace them after that time, its nothing a grinder and a re weld couldnt fix.

Thanks

Have you seen pics of 2gs where the ball joint breaks? Not pretty. And if you're going any faster then 25mph you're going to need a new pair of shorts. I got complete replacement 1g control arms from 1aauto for about $100 for the pair. I have a post about it somewhere on dsmtuners.

Iirc from my first dsm where i replaced them with moog balljoints they are press fit ball joints so they shouldn't be loose.

Also replacing the arm helps with the rusty pitting that I'm sure is happening under the bushing on the shaft of the control arm where it mounts to the body.

But I guess welding them in would work, it's not the way I would do it, but to each their own. Ya just need to keep them still and running a bead around would work.

No I put new ball joints in it and where they mount in the control arm is where they are loose. The ball joints themselves are good but I'm replacing them anyways bc I already have the new pair. I don't feel like getting new control arms and the underside of my car is actually pretty clean for being a Michigan DSM. These ball joints aren't pressed in but slide in then have a clip on top that holds them in place. There is no up and down movement but the whole ball joint assembly slides side to side an back and forth.

They are actually drive works (advance auto cheapys) and as the pic shows a clip that holds them up in place to keep them from falling out. but they still wiggle so I was just gonna take the clip off and weld a ring around it in place and do the same to the bottom as well.

Return what you have a get a set of Moog joints and have them pressed in.

I was looking at the moog joints online and they look the same as the shit i got. Just push them in from the bottom and put that stupid c clip around it. I hate to oreder them sit and wait for them and have them still not work. :banghead:

I just replaced my front ball joints the other day. Rent a balljoint press from Autozone, O'reilly or some other parts store. I flipped the tool upside down with the threaded part at the top then used one of the round hollow pieces and two disc pieces at one end. I wish I would have taken a picture because it is difficult to explain. I tightened it with my air tools and it literally popped into place.

I unbolted the strut, removed the axle nut, left the tie rod connected, and pulled the axle out of the hub. With air tools and the ball joint press I could replace each side again on maybe 30 mins.

With the ball joint press flipped upside down I did not use any inserts on the one side of the large c-clamp piece. It actually fit the bottom of the ball joint quite well.

I assure you they are not. I replaced my ball joints recently in one of my 1g's and they are a press fit joint with a clip to hold it in place.

The joints are press fit AND have a clip. You have a worn and weakened arm. Replace it or don't drive in public.

Exactly. It takes quite a bit of force to actually press those balljoints in, most shops do it hydraulically (for effort and time saving). If you can wiggle the entire balljoint assembly in the control arm, replace the control arm.

Of course, there is a chance that the cheapo one you got was manufacturered incorrectly, so you can try an actual quality piece and see if it does the same. In all likelihood, you have a really worn control arm and should not drive around with it. That clip is there as a last resort measure to guard against total failure only.

This.
The balljoint is supposed to have to be pressed into the bore in the c.arm. If it takes little or no effort to get the balljoint in, something is wrong. Usually it means the bore in the c.arm has "grown" due to wear or whatever.

Oh hell, now I need to check mine (ORiely) house brand. The old ones I popped out with a 6lb and the new ones just slid in. I chaulked it up to them being frozen for 2 days. Oh well better safe then sorry and no I havent driven the car since I installed them

Got name brand ball joints and they still wiggle inside of them. So I got new control arms on the way. They were cheap enough but I still would be curious if I welded them in if they would have work. :hmm:

The welds look better

I was commenting on the better welds on the Dorman CAs. My balljoints wiggled to and for $129 shipped better safe then sorry

I was talking about welding the ball joint into the stock control arm as they move and wiggle inside the arm

Guess it would depent on how well..a mild steel can be tacked to an alloy (depending on the balljoint housing)
