1g axle vs 2g axle for awd

That is quite confusing....

What year car did the tranny come out of btw??? You might have mentioned it but I probably missed it...
 
no idea what year the tranny came from, i thought all 2g trannies were the same besides auto and manual of course :(
 
Only thing I can think of at this point is the half-shaft is NOT in far enough or you got a FWD transmission.

You really should locate the ID tags and make sure they are the same. Not just take someones word for it however good it is because at this point, there's definitely something wrong here.

its DEFINATELY not a FWD trans dude, i know my stuff, im not that dumb. I did go to wyotech ha, I better know the diff in awd or fwd dont ya think? well i did some custom fabbin and got it to work. Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it.

In ANY of my posts did I EVER call you dumb or eluded to the fact that you didn't know jack? Congrats on going to Wyotech, you're a better man than I. Its called process of elimination but you already knew that...you're welcome anyway.
 
now now now im not saying im better then anyone but the fact that the trans looks totally different, has a tranny cooler, has a toque converter instead of a clutch, and has a place for a tcase to bolt on gave away thats its an awd auto trans. thats all im saying
 
To tell you the truth I was skimming your post, but I'm having the exact same problem and I can't seem to figure it out....
 
Just a thought, but if you hammered on the shaft, you could have almost imperceptably dinged the splines enough to cause a problem.

You can take a triangular or narrow flat file and carefully file the edges between the splines right at the end (go no further than an 1/16" or so back into the splines) and see if it will slide in better/further.

If you absolutely HAVE to bang on any type of splined shaft for some reason, always use a piece of wood. ;)
 
To tell you the truth I was skimming your post, but I'm having the exact same problem and I can't seem to figure it out....Where the shaft goes in the tranny are splines...there are a 2nd set of splines in the tranny are the 100% lined up?? When I stuck my finger in it kinda felt that the 2nd set of splines was shifted...??

Have either of you figured this out yet?

I'm curious to see if the auto shaft is longer than the manual shaft.
 
Personally, it doesn't sound like a good idea to just fab something up to make this work. If it's not fitting like it should, there's a reason. And you're likely to cause more problems by just fabbing something up to fix the issue. If it were me, I wouldn't stop until I knew the problem. I agree that either maybe the shaft isn't in all the way (as if the c-clip is stopping it), or maybe the carrier bearing isn't on all the way. Regardless, I'd be trying to figure out the cause. Hell, pull the tranny and inspect it and the other tranny you had where the axle went in and see if you can visually see any differences. Maybe take the shaft and stick it in the other tranny and see if it goes in that one all the way. I dunno man. Just giving ideas, but I wouldn't be doing it half-assed.
 
Ok so try this. Make sure your snap ring is not holding you up, check the tranny for debris, probably none, get your halfshaft into the trans where it's sliding in and clicked into the teeth of the tranny right, and if it's not quite in all the way grab a 2x4 scrap and a 50 pound.

We ran into the same problem with my TSI, and I got pissed off and tapped it in with the 50 pound sledge. Once in the Transmission, you put the 2x4 on the outside edge of the axle, have a friend hold it if you can't, then start smacking the 2x4. Reason for the scrap wood is so you don't screw up the axle and threading when installing it.

Not too much pressure, don't wanna break the tranny but just enough to get the snap ring to pass the lip.

OH and getting it out will be fun, we ended up pulling the tranny to get it out the first time.
