I"m some what new to dsm's,, But i own a 90 laser a/t and i'm going to convert to a manual i bought a donor car that runs and drives a 92 talon manual,,

I would like to know how hard it is?? What should i look out for,, any special tools i will need?

Are the axle diff sizes?

Just thing's i would like to know before i get started, i would hate to get 90% of it done and find out it's not going to work,, any one that can tell me any thing about this that would be nice,,

it wont be easy, but not impossible. will take some work to get it done, since you have both cars, basically you just have to start swapping stuff from one to the other. if you use all the 5 speed parts off the 92 and get rid of your 90 auto stuff, everything will fit on good.

Thanks,,, i was told the hardest part was going to be putting the holes in the fire wall? but i'm not sure never tryed any thing like this but i'm really good at working on cars so i'm sure i will get it!!!

But i was wondering,, the site i went one to read about the swap said take out the auto computer,, but never said any thing about an manual computer, Is there one and where is it located in the car?

Where is the tcu located

Because i'v read some where i would need the tcu out of the manual to!! But i might be wrong..

I'm new to dsm,, well some what!!

Yes,, this is where i got my info to know how to do it!! But the problem is i don't know where the auto tranny computer (TCU) is located in the car

I think it is the one monted on the fire wall behind the raido,, but i'm not 100% sure!

its mounted in behind the radio like you said, but make sure you take that out....and not the ECU. LOL

anyways, yea i would assume cutting the holes for the clutch pedal assembly would be one of the harder things of the swap

Is the tranny going to bolt up? The donor car is a 92 talon and my car is a 90 laser rs,, I'm wondering if i'm going to have any truble with things not bolting togeather?

Sry about asking so much but i'm trying to make sure that this is going to be worth the time and money!

Im doing the conversion too, i was told that i needed 1990 shift linkage, base, and mounting brackets. I allready got the parts..just to let you know there is a difference on the shifters. Have fun taking out the pedals, your gonna say every curse word you can think of. Its not that hard just very frustrating! But ne ways im pretty sure your gonna need the 1990 shifting parts correct me if im wrong?? You jus need to toss out the tcu, keep your ecu..

Yes it is a FWD

When you say 90 shift parts do you mean just the shitfter and linkage
or tranny and every thing??

:dsm: LETS GET THE FACTS RIGHT :dsm:

Ok Just so that every one is up to date on what is going on so far,, i will post and tell you!

I have a 90 laser rs N/T (FWD) i'm converting it from Auto to an manual. i have a donor car that i'm getting the parts from it's a "92 talon (FWD) N/T"

I plain on doing the swap this comming weekend!! i will post pics or the process for all to see and so people who want to o this later on will know what stuff they will have to go tro!

Now i have been told that the shifter, shifter linkage, and shifter base will not work on my car due to the fact they are different sizes,,, (I WILL MAKE IT FIT)

If any one has done this swap before and has pic's of tips or something plz get a hold of me some how, and lets talk

Thanks to all!!

yea the shift linkage, shift base "stick" , and mounting brackets.. as for the transmisson any year from 90-94 is ok. im looking for the thread that explained this pretty good about the 1990 parts being a bit different from 91 and up.

Ok,, is there a way that i can make new holes in the floor board and still make the 92 shiftter work in the car!!!

Or just maybe spot weld the base to the floor board and use it!! b/c if i would have knowen that it would not have worked i would have looked around for a 90 LOL and not have bought the 92 to do the convershion!!!

Thanks for all the help

If you're using the linkage/shifter and the transission from the '92 you'll be fine. Since you're discarding all the automatic trans parts and replacing them with manual parts the 90-92 part difference is moot. The shifter plate bolts to the exact same holes in the console, there are just minor differences in the plate design and the brackets on the trans.

As for the manual->auto computer thing, I don't know if there's a difference on the N/T's, but on the turbo DSM's, the ECU's are calibrated for different injectors/cams/turbo. That's most likely what whoever said that to you was talking about.

OK THANKS GUYS

I believe i got all the info i need,, i will be taking pics of the convershion as i do it so that every one can see the step by step

thanks for all the help
