I was wondering if the 1g 7bolt motors and 2g 7 bolt motors are interchangeable. The reason I ask is because I just acquired a 93 tsi awd in need of a short block. Ive only dealt with 6 bolt engines so I dont know the compatability of the 7 bolt. I just need something cheap for a dd and it seems the 2g motors are easier to find and cheaper the the 1g motors.

1G 7-bolt uses a:

6-bolt waterpump
7-bolt oil pump
6-bolt cylinder head
7-bolt oil pan
7-bolt crank
7-bolt rods
7-bolt pistons with 1G-like 7.8:1 compression.

...it can get a little confusing, but those are the main points.

You can actually use your 2g crank angle sensor on a 1g 7 bolt engine by grinding out about 1/8th of an inch from the oil pump casting. The holes are already drilled and tapped.

That'll work fine. That's actually how I did my stroker. You will need teh lower timing cover from the 1g block among a couple other pieces, but like I said before, even the crank sensor will bolt in :thumb:

Thats odd. My 1g 7 bolt didnt have provisions for the crank sensor. Did you have to swap a 2g front cover onto it for it to work? Also, the 1gb 7bolt still uses the 1g head so there are no provisions for the cas behind the cam gear.

My 93 block (which was from an A/T if that makes any difference, which it shouldn't) had a depression where the crank sensor would go and two holes already drilled and tapped all on the front cover. I just used the "disk" part from my 2g and it all worked.

im planning on doing the same

im rebuilding a naked 1gb 7 bolt block..

so ill need a new, forged rods and pistons, new oil pan(or reuse the 2g one,it still looks good-) new cover w/oil pump, waterpump, waterpipe, new gears and pulleys anyway..

ill swap the 2g head on and use the 2g accesories..

i dont see how im missing something..

Hope you don't mind me piggybacking with some related questions... :)

I have a '93 with a 1g 7-bolt engine which my son ran low on oil. I pulled the engine and the #2 and #3 rods got hot and have bearing damage. I can see where the crank got hot, and it has bearing residue, though it appears repairable.

I also have a 6-bolt short block w/flywheel in good condition with the balance shaft removed.

Question #1: Will the 6-bolt short block mate up to the 1g 7-bolt head okay and bolt into the chassis without any drama? (Sounds like it from reading above...)

#2. Are the 2g 7-bolt rods interchangeable with the 1g 7-bolt rods? (I'd like to replace a couple of rods if I am to keep this engine.)

Thanks! Stan
