This is my problem, I have a 1998 GST , I was going to rebuild the motor, But come to find out when I ordered the bearings for the vin # of the car , I don't get the right bearings for the crakshaft. The guy that I bought the car from used to work at mitsubshi for 5 years , he was a service guy and told me he had the block switch out under warrenty for the new style thrust bearings , the 3 piece ones. So now I don't really know what to order for bearings for the crankshaft , the # stamped into the block is 11001 from the flywheel side to the timming belt side, I know that is there to help with the bearings , but how? thanks

Those 5 will refer to the rod bearings. Right beside that should be 4 roman numerals for the crank bearings. Get those numbers and tell the mitsu dealer what they are and they can hook you right up.

are you sure thats right , why would there be 5 #'s for 4 sets of rod bearings?

Hey man thats not working also , just got off the phone with them , and they said they do everything by vin # . I told them the block was changed out and told them I could give them the # 's on the block that corrospond to the bearings and they said those # 's cant do us any good. So its not looking good right now as my engine is all took apart

Hmmmmm. Well this is where I come toa bit of a loss, but I am sure someone else will chime in with some other ideas. If I think of anything more that will help I will let you know. I do know that mile high mitsu in Denver can ID bearings by "color" which is what the numbers represent.

I really need some good answers to this , I can't believe mits used so many different bearings in the same motor.

Hi Fast GST.

My son and I are rebuilding his 98 GST and I too had a difficult time determining what crank bearings we needed. The engine also has the 3 piece thrust bearing, like yours. I located a dealership, Rockville Mitsubishi, in Maryland and talked with the parts manager, Mike Deal, who was extremely helpful. Give him a call at 1-800-962-9974. I gave him the numbers stamped on the block along with the vin #. He and a technician came up with the part number using those numbers and the factory manual. Also, they give a pretty good DSM discount. Their website is mitsupartsdirect.com. I checked my CAPS program and determined that your part numbers are probably the following:

MD195918 - crank bearings (will need 5 sets) I came up with this part number based on your other post that said all your crank bearings had a 3 stamped on it and the CAPS program having an S3 in the remarks next to this part number.

MD351820 - thrust bearings (if your engine is like mine, you will need 1 set)

Please double check with Mike Deal first before ordering. Hope that helps.

I started to feel like I was the only one dealing with these problems, I have to say thanks for helping me out ,I will call him on Monday and check with him. Yea, the biggest problem was this car was put together at the plant in 97 with the old style thrust bearing . The guy I bought it from had a new block put in it with the new style thrust bearing 3 piece. So the vin # on the car really doesn't work , because its the new block. Everyone I have been talking with doesn't have answer , and I can't understand why mits. did this with all the different bearings. But thanks alot , is your thrust bearing 3 piece also.
This is what is stamped on the two sides of the thrust bearing ,the two feer flowing sides, mine has a 0G03 on both of them. Thanks again:)

Just wanted to know what is your CAPS program?

Glad I could help Fast GST.

Yes, I have the 3 piece thrust bearing. Based on what I have read, if the vehicle was built after 5/97, it has the new 3 piece thrust bearings. The part number I gave you for the thrust bearing should be correct. There is only one number in CAPS for our year vehicle. The problem is with the 5 crank bearings. There are five different part numbers for those.

Do you have the engine out of the vehicle? If so, the engine has a vin# stamped on it that will help with getting the right bearings. While looking at the flywheel side of the block, it is located in the upper left corner, just below the head. You may be able to see it while the engine is in the car, unsure though. I didn't know it was there until I got the block back from the machine shop after it was thermo cleaned. Give that vin# to Mike instead of the one for the car.

The Mitsubishi Computerized Automatic Parts Search System (CAPS) is a handy computer program to have. I enter the vin# and can the locate any Mitsubishi part number for my son's vehicle. The most recent version I could find is here:

If you need help with figuring out the program or want me to look up a part, let me know.

my computer is having a problem getting the CAPS program, is there a different link? i would love to have the CAPS program. Or if someone can send me a copy of it, just leave me a message to talk about it or email (baracuda645). It would be great since i'm rebulding my own car and engine.

The first 3 links under "Download the files" don't work. Depending on what type of internet connection you have, dial-up or broadband, try one of the first 2 links under "You can also download the files from Stealth316.com".

If you ever purchase a factory manual backup CD, which I would highly recommend, it has the CAPS program on it. There is a link right below the 2 links I just told you about. I bought mine from ebay.
