1998 Auto trans (park) problem

Hey I'm buying this 98 eclipse GSX Automatic and what is going on is it goes into all other gear selections fine except Park and i was wondering what could cause this and how can i possibly fix this without replacing the transmission?

IT could be a number if things. It is kind of hard to tell. It would fairly easy to drop the pan and check out the linkage inside the tranny. It could be something as simple as a damaged shifter cable, something lodged in the shifter assemble, or it could be something in the tranny.

do you have any example pics cause i really don't know automatics to well and ill get more details when i pick it up monday

You would really just have to look at it and feel it out. I can't show you a picture of what might be wrong with it because there are so many random possible situations. Just pull the console. Look around the shifter, see if anything looks out of place or damaged. If not i would un hook the shifter cable and see if the shifter will shift into park with the cable un hooked. If it does than there is a problem with the cable or transmission. You can at this time un-bolt the shifter cable from the transmission and see if there are any snags in the cable and see if the linkage on the tranny will shift into park It could also be an improperly adjusted linkage on the transmission.

If it's just park I would say something to do with the valve body. Possibly a solenoid.

Park isn't controlled by the valve body, it is a separate linkage off the main shaft that goes to the differential

well i got the car running and drove it 50 miles and now the park gear works ..strange
