Ok. I have totally decided on the 97' GS. I took all of your opinions carefully and researched like crazy and I have decided at 17, First car, Im into ricing, and insurance the GS is best for me. Later on in life I can ALWAYS turbo it if I want to. So it leaves possibilities open and insurance stays the same. :D So Now that I read about how to properly buy a dsm from that one thread on here I feel cofident to start lookin at whats out there. I can get a GS around 3,000 to 3,500. At that price and like 65,000 miles, thats not bad. I have a few questions though. Even though its a 7-bolt engine, is it still just as prone to CW as turbo'd versions? I am also blown out of proportion stupid when it comes to all of the computer and fuel system stuff. Please show me an article or link that teaches about ECU's and SAFC's and Stand alone fuel managment crap Like a idiots guide LOL. Whats the safc do? Whats it for is it neccesary? Basically I just need to know everything I need to buy when modding.

If I bought the 97 GS and did a full engine rebuild, changed the belts n hoses and went sythetic and all that and put these mods on (look down) what else would I need to make it all fit and mesh and act right?

HKS Racing Cams
Greddy Cat back exhaust
4-1 Greddy Headers
Injen Racing Cold air intake
Do they make a racing manifold? Big bore throttle body for the 2G N-T? Would that help?
Titanium valve springs
Then what else? Computer chip? safc wtf is that? I need help. :sosad: OMG WTF

Well underdrive pulley for sure. what that does is replace the OEM crank pulley, and replace it with a lighter pulley which will underdrive your accessory belts by 20-30%.

you can also get a 60mm throttle body as well. But some people feel thats overkill NA. and you could always bore out the stocker to 57mm.

you can also Port and Polish your intake manifold, and get headwork done as well.

If you do go with the 97, you can also get a new ECU from www.howellautomotive.com. They sell a ECU that claims to get anywhere from 9-25hp or so. I forget.

Finally you can get adjustable cam gears and/or cam shafts.

that all should cost you 700-1000 bucks if you wanna go down that road before messing with internals and turbocharging her.

Ok ok...here we go LOL. First of all, keep searching on here and at 2gnt.com, there is loads and tons of info that you'll never finish reading haha. Glad to hear you're stickin with the 420a :thumb:

As far as the engines go, we're not categorized by that 6-bolt, 7-bolt nonsense hehe, and no you hardly ever hear of a 420a crankwalking like the notorious other guys :p

When you get the car, or even before you buy...you'll want to do a compression check. That will let you know the condition of the motor, and whether you should make them drop the price some

As far as mods go, your list seems to be all over the place, so we'll kinda narrow that down some.

You'll definitely want the AF/X underdrive pulley. A nice catback exhaust like the Tsudo isn't very expensive. You could also get a header and downpipe, then an ebay intake with a nice k&n filter to help the engine breathe better. There's no such thing as a computer chip that you can just plug in and get mad horsepower from, but that AF/X ecu is very nice for the 97 mtx cars. You could have the stock throttle body ported or bored to 55mm, but any bigger than that really and you're wasting time while naturally aspirated. As for the headwork, our heads were designed rather nicely by lotus, and I wouldn't feel the need to jump in and replace cams, springs, retainers, gears etc right off the bat.

This is kinda just a beginning of where to head and go, but as I've already said...this stuff has been posted and stickied etc all over the place, and I'm just being nice right now ;)

Well, 97GS-T, it's your lucky day! X is being nice to you :p (nah, J/K. He's always nice. Don't let him fool you). But you're lucky if you are buying the 97 because you have the ability to install the AF/X ECU. It is a great tuning piece for our cars. You can think of it as a "chipped" ECU for our cars ( be sure to understand that it is not. But it is as close as you can get as it alters fuel and redline so that you can get more out of the car). It is plug and play.

I love your enthusiasm and the fact that you took the time to research and make an educated decision based on various factors (not seen that often in a 17 year old). Good for you.

X makes some good points (except for the TB comments. We would disagree at that point but he is correct in your case. Until you're at the point of doing high reving internals, 55 is all that is needed) and has helped you focus a little better. Take your time and do one thing at a time. As you go you will research more and you can focus better that way.

Good luck,

MB

WTF X, what was that? You were sooo nice to that guy, and didn't even use the :spam: emoticon once! LOL

To the original poster, read this first.

Oh yeah, HKS doesn't make cams for us, and it is something you will have to watch out for. Make sure that all the parts you buy are for the 2nd Gen Non Turbo or the 420a Eclipse/Talon. The turbo parts(for the most part) won't work for us.
