I searched and didn;t really find exactly what I was looking for. I am wondering if a 50.3/68 18g COMPRESSOR wheel only will fit on a big16g. I read that the 16 compressor cover will need to be machined. I have access to a lathe and also a CNC machine so I am not really worried about it. I am just wondering what exactly needs to be machined or if it will work.

If anyone has any info that would be great .

Kevin

The 18G compressor wheel will directly replace the Big 16G, Evo III 16G, and 20G compressor wheels without any machining necessary to the center housing. The 14B and Small 16G would require the center housing to be machined as well so the compressor backplate can fit.

Obviously you'll need to have the compressor cover machined, but not much correction will be needed as the exducer diameter of the Big 16G and 18G are the same. The 18G inducer is bigger by approx. .088"

Do you think it will be worthwhile to do? I already have all the parts and the labor will be free.

I don't know if what kind of gain to expect if any over the regular big16g

What do you mean machining to the center housing? Wouldn't the machined area in the backplate be the only difference besides the compressor cover? What exactly would need to be machined on the center housing?

Thanks,
Kevin

Also isthe Big16g compressor cover much bigger than the small 16g?

I remembered but thanks for the heads up.

Anyone know how big the inlet is on a small 16g?

The covers are the same, the problem is that the wheels exducers are larger there fore when you try to put the cover back on it will make contact with wheel.

As for the machining question, the 14b wheel is smaller in diameter than the big 16g's there for the center housings are machined different.

Ok I see what you are saying. So by the center housing you are actually talking about the backing plate to the compressor cover. They are the same size but the 16g has a larger area taken out due to the fact that the wheel is bigger. So I will need to machine the backing plate with enough room to fit the larger wheel+ tolerances for the shaft play and movement. Same goes with the compressor cover.

Yes, but in your case as Jusmx stated your wheel is diameteris the same as the 18g just that the exducers are slightly larger meaning the when you put your comp cover back on it will make contact. in other words wheel fits in center housing but comp cover will make contact with the slightly larger exducers.

Center Housing Rotating Assembly. That thing between the comp cover and turbine housing.:)

I understand what the CHRA is I was confused because I didn't know if people were saying that some part of the CHRA needed to be machined or just the Comp cover and backing plate.

I think we are all on the same path just different terminology. I don't know its late and I just want to get the ball rolling on this thing LOL.

And what about the parts fitting in a small 16g? Same as big 16g besides the backing plate needing to be machined correct?

I sent my 14b and 16g to be machined for a 18g wheel, both CHRA's had to be machined and so did the comp covers other than that everything is the same internally except the backing plate for the 14b which is straight and not tapered. Vfaq has the pics for reference.

Since I had my comp wheels removed I decided to do a rebuild too so I had fresh turbo's I knew would be good for a while.

I have a blown Big 16G and I have always wanted to rebuild it with 20G parts. I don't want no ebay shit unless its absolutely necessary, but anyone know where to get a kit with everything needed?

My turbo is completely done so I want to do it right

What do you mean "kit"? No real upgrade "kits" are available because there are so many different wheel options.

If you buy a standard TD05H rebuild kit and a 20G compressor wheel, the last thing you'd need to do is either have your Big 16G compressor cover machined or find a 20G cover.

This is actually getting stupid because all questions have been answered already.

14b and small 16g CHRA have to be machined in order to fit a big 16, evo 16g or 18g wheel, that goes for Comp cover too.

14b rebuild kit is not compatible with 16g's(backing plate is different the rest is compatible)

All 16g, 18g, and 20g TDO5H rebuild kits are compatible.(ask JUSMX141 to be sure)
