180 out?

Just bought a 95 gsx. Got home and seen markes on timing belt. So i replaced. I did'nt move anything, but wanted to know can you be 180 out in timing with these cars or will it kill the motor? piston is on top dead but marks on harmonic balance is 180 out from marks on the timing belt cover.

Marks on the crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer) and on the timing cover are not mechanical timing marks, they are ignition (electrical, if you will) timing marks. To check the mechanical timing marks, you will need to remove the timing cover. You can see the location of the timing marks in the picture below, pulled from the 2G timing belt tutorial on VFAQ:

A quick check is to try rotating the engine over by hand using a 1/2" ratchet or breaker bar on the crank bolt in the center of the crank pulley. Pulling the spark plugs will make it rotate easier if it rotates at all. If it doesn't rotate, then you have an interference issue and need to check your timing marks.
