Next summer I'm going to start autocrossing my non daily driver 2ga. After much research, reading many threads, and considering the "will these wheels / tires fit" charts. I have decided that I am going with 17x9-40mm offset with 245/40/17 tires and rolled fenders and 3-5mm spacers in the rear. I'm not pushing the 255 limit because I'll be straping R-comps which are wider and the rear knuckle on the 2ga gives less clearance than the 2gb.

So my question is, what are my options for wheels that are size 17x9-40mm?

A quick google search shows:
  • Volk CE28N Genesis
  • Enkei PF01
but I am a fan of the 5 or 6 spoke wheels like the "kosei k1 racing" or the FN01R-C

I've seen many lists provided by members that are using the 35mm offset but what are some of my 40mm offset options?

Have you thought about running a OEM enkei EVO8 wheel? the fitment is OEM quality they are really lightweight, make tons of tire options for them and are a 17X8 +35 offset. and are decently cheap?
Otherwise you have Rotas to look into, (IK-R - ROTA Wheels) and RPF1's are a good wheel, but a little more expensive.

Evo 8 wheels are not that light. I have them on my car, they weigh 21 lbs each. They are lighter but not by much. To give you an idea 2g five spoke wheels (16") weigh 22lbs, and swirlys 25lbs.

The benefit comes in witht he aditional tire width. Yea, any unspung weight is great to reduce, but 4 pounds (one each) is not much.

I also recommend RPF1 rims, they are light as hell, 16 lbs for 17x8 35offset.

Also, I know that the 2g have different rear knuckles, I think they allow for different offset tires, I have to find where I read that.....foudn it: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/handling-tech/355513-255-40-17s-17x9s-w-40mm-offset.html

Agent, I was actually reading that thread last night and StrmTrpr brings up the question of 40mm offset but then they immediately start talking about +35 the entire thread!

The more I think about it, the more I'm thinking +35 is the way to go. It's documented and more wheels come in the +35.

I wish I could get my hands on the Kosei K1 racing wheels (5 spoke) but I cant find a sizing chart for them to check out my options

You could always achieve your desired offset by using some 3mm to 8mm spacers.

I used some 5mm spacers on my last DSM for better tire fitment and a better look. Didn't have one problem with them.

I'll have to get spacers for the back regardless.
Is 8mm the largest spacer available?
Is there any disadvantage (performance or otherwise?) to running a higher offset with a spacer? For example, a +40 w/ a 5mm spacer vs 35mm?

Thanks for the help and expertise :)

You can get spacers for almost any size.

Some people say that running a spacer wears out drive train components sooner, but i've never had an issue and a few of my buddies that run AutoX and Road/Track Course have never had any problems.

Always keep an eye on things of course.

For Example:
On my old GT4, I ran a 25mm rear spacer to give me a +15 in the rear. (Wheel was +40)
Never had a problem.

Haha, I almost had my mind set for the +35... Now you're saying I could use spacers instead and gain more versatility. :hmm:

I have time to wait before she is even going to be raced, or run for that matter. I'll be buying used R-comps and wheels so I will guess I'll have to see was pops up on the classifieds. I'm watching these forums, craigslist, and about 5 other scca forums.

Okay thanks Brian, I was just finishing up reading the 12th page of your brothers "fuse box relocation" from 2008. Do you guys still autocross regularly? If so, where?

I just moved from Towson, MD to Washington DC. Baltimore didn't have any autocross that I could find! Now I'm in DC but I missed the season here because they can only race at the Redskins stadium up until preseason starts, then all their races go to the eastern shore :notgood:

My Dad and I used to go to the classic car show at Carlisle when I was a kid! I would drive up to Hershey if my car were street legal! Its a paperwork issue that results in me not being able to title the vehicle in my name. How far do you think I would get down the road while not rocking any tags? LOL

I need to find some DSM'ers down here in DC. I've only seen Fast n Furious style RS's down here :(

Golfer, are you going to be racing them? Like Agent said, they aren't that light but you might be able to get the evo wheels for cheap if someone is "upgrading" to aftermarket wheels.

For me, I think it's going to be the first good deal that's the right size
