I'm looking to stuff as wide of wheels and tires as I can under my 1g as I'm building the car for track days and eventually road racing.

I was wondering if someone who has a 17x8 inch wheel and coilovers (small springs) could measure the closest point between the tire and spring and wheel and spring. I have no problem rolling the fenders a bit to get some more room, I just want to know how wide I can go. I'd love to run a 255 hoosier on 17x8.5 wheels.

I just want to know the offset of the wheel, and the space between your suspension and tires.

I'm thinking that a 17x8.5 (or 9) wheel with a 30mm offset would work.

255s won't fit inside the fender without rubbing the suspension. the distance between mine (245s, 40mm offset, GCs) is not big enough to fit any more. people running 255s let them stick out past the fenders.

and there is nothing to roll on the fenders.

I've been planning on getting some 17x8.5 Enkei RPF1's with some 235/40/17 Toyo RA1's for my track days. I've been told by some Wisemen here and by the Enkei rep that they should fit without sticking out (too much). I can't remember what offset I had planned to go with though... Of course, I have to sell my Racing Harts before I can go out and buy these.

I'm in the same boat - I want the widest tire and wheel I can get without sticking out of the fender. I need some grip for the road courses.

you can go with 245/40s easily (obviously not with the toyos as 245/40/17s aren't made). if you are running ANY negative camber in the front, they will tuck. don't know about the extra half inch on the wheels for sure, but if offset stays around 40mm and you have a degree or 2 of negative camber, they should fit.

So has anyone run a 17x8.5 with 40mm offset and a 235/40/17 tire without rubbing issues on a 1G? My car is lowered about 2 inches and I run 2" negative camber in front and about 1" negative in the rear. I ask because the Enkei rep said I'd be better off going with a 30mm offset, but I found a great deal on the wheels I want, yet they've got a 40mm offset. Please, if anyone knows for sure that these will fit without rubbing, let me know quickly.

Luda i'm running close to what your looking for. I already stated before but i'll repeat that they are 17x8 with a 41-42mm offset (not sure off hand) with 235/45/17 tires. The fronts stick out alittle bit, somewhere between 1/4"-1/2". I can't say that they won't rub for you as my fronts will rub if i hit a descent pothole or dip at speed. Of course this is probably also due to the fact that i was running the original factory suspension. This is changing this evening :D . If i would be running alittle negative camber i don't think it would be an issue.

If you can give me an update later tonight after your changes, I'd appreciate it.

Well i'm not going to go out pothole hunting but i'll let you know. I do however need to go get an align meant afterwards and i don't plan on running negative camber if i can avoid it as it's my daily driver. But i could literally take my old shocks and struts in my hands and compress them without much pressure. So i have no doubt that had something to do with it.

I bought some nice evo 8 rims, 17x8 with a 40mm offset, and I wanted to slap some 245's on, but they won't fit because of the offset, I don't think 8.5's would work too well with a 40mm offset. This is just me speculating, maybe if you have a full coil over suspension it won't rub too badly (My front tires ARE rubbing the stock suspension when I go over bumps, but thats because my front shocks aren't very stiff and these rims are nice and light.) I would play it safe and go with a 30mm offset, I think I might get some 5mm spacers just to help my rubbing a little. When I turn the wheel all the way it doesn't touch the inner side of the wheel well, but there is rubbing marks there, so I dunno when, but it is rubbing there too.

Is it rubbing on the lower spring perch or somewhere else? I'm running ground controls with the lower perch cut off.

that would do it, it is rubbing the lower perch, so the inside of my front tires are basically totalled. ROFL Ill probably get new tires anyways, so if I get new suspension first I should be in the clear. Maybe I can just run negative camber and cancel the uneven wear out.

Ok sorry it took so long. The car still isn't on the road as my brake lines haven't arrived yet like they should have but i can still give you an update Luda. The wheels are going to rub on the fender. There's no question about it. There's maybe a 1/2" at best clearance right now from the fender lip to the top of the tire in the front. I'm not sure how stiff the agx's are but i don't see them being that stiff.

On another note there will actually be a local guy trying to stuff 17x8.5" volk gram lites w/ a +30 offset and 255/40/17 sized tires this weekend. I'll let you know how well that works out.

Luda, the tires I just got are the same size as you are planning to use, but the wheels I got them for are 17x8 and +35. My suspension is stock but I'll post my clearance once I put them on. I have little/no doubt they will fit but I think a +40 in this case is cutting it close.

Just a quick FYI - it will be stiffer spring rates that keep the fenders off the tires, not really the AGX's.

Let me know how it works out with the guy who is trying the Volks, and let me know if he's got a 1g or 2g, big difference.

Tirerack actually sells a set of 17x8 with a 40mm offset that is supposed to fit fine. And I've seen others using a similar setup, it should work. It's when you get up over 8" wide that there is a gray area.

Well I test fitted my wheels today, and now I'm positive that a 235/40/17 mounted on a 40mm wheel would fit. With my 35mm offset and those tires, I could fit my thumb between the tire and lower spring perch. Since my wheels now stick out HALF AN INCH, I gotta use up all that extra space that would be wasted with these tires, so I'm sending them back and getting 245/45/17.

(off topic) I changed my mind on the type too, I'm getting the Falken RT-615 instead of my original BFG G-force KDW because I can get them $20/each cheaper, and they're 100 treadwear softer.

mmm sticky tires

I i finally got my car back on the road today. The 17x8's just aren't going to work. Of course it seems the springs i'm using dropped it alot more than the 1.5" they claimed to do. If i hit any bumps my wheels would rub on the fender and if i turned all the way to the right i would rub my drivers side wheel.

Really? What camber are you running? I usually run -2 degrees in the front. You can probably run -1 to 1.5 and not have severe tire wear issues. That might help. What's the wheel rubbing on when you turn?

I dont run any camber at the current moment. I actually have to take in in today to get an alignment as the back is way out of spec. The tire is getting rubbed on the fender. Like i mentioned before the front wheels stick out past the fender by maybe 1/4-1/2" or so. I now have so cuts in the edge of the tire from the 10 miles i drove it. I put my stock 16's back on and they dont rub the fender but they also don't stick out past the fender. I do however think my mechanic neglected to cut the bumpstops as something is hitting when i go over bumps/dips alittle to fast.

What offset are you running?
