16G turbo - Broken shaft

Well I decided to tear apart my 16G that came on the talon and do a quick rebuild and just turn it for a little money. The turbo had a good bit of axis and in/out shaft play. I already have a turbo im going to be using once the motor is rebuilt. But during dis assembly the nut did not want to come off the shaft of the turbo, so I sprayed it with deep creep and let it set for a while. I returned and tried once more to break the nut loose on the compressor side but it did not want to budge too much. The nut finally came loose and began to spin off then all of the sudden the nut...and part of the shaft fall off. The shaft has literally broken behind the compressor wheel.

Is there any way I can save this turbo such as buying another exhaust wheel with the shaft installed? Or is it more or less junk due to being balanced a certain way?


And yes the turbo has left handed threads and I was turning the bolt in the correct direction. That was the first thing i checked before I even put a wrench on it.
 
I have the TD05H 16G
12 blade exhaust side
6 blade compressor side


Compressor wheel
Inducer: 1.900
Exducer:2.670

Turbine Wheel:
Inducer: 1.925
Exducer: 2.205



So yeah that kit wouldnt work. Ill have to keep looking.
 
Yes you can get a new shaft with turbine. Do you have an evo 3 16g, big 16g, or small 16g?

That may not be the one you need though

14b and ALL 16g's use the same TD05H turbine. Jusmx141 has some Mitsu TD05H turbine shafts for sale for 65 bucks a week or two ago. Maybe he still has some. That'd be your best best as the ebay ones are NOT genuine mitsu and use inferior metal that won't stand up to the exhaust heat as well as the real deal. Especially if you happen to go a little too lean.

I'd be very weary of the link above as I don't see how those could be genuine Mitsubishi components at that price. Just be careful before you go buying that...
 
Well...Im not sure if ill even bother with rebuilding it. Im looking at $80 for a new shaft, $50 to rebuild it. Thats $130, and I dont see getting more than $200 if Im lucky if it sells. Almost not worth the trouble LOL
 
You should pm Justin (jusmx) and ask him what he thinks as he is the turbo brain on here. He might can give you a better idea at what costs you're looking at and what you should be able to resell for. Just a suggestion though.
 
^ What she said. You could also stalk the classifieds until something pops up. When working with cheaper turbos, it's usually better to find a new/used one than spend too much trying to repair your old one. Especially if the problem is in the gut of your chra.
 
Ill double check, but I turned the nut clockwise(away from me, exhaust housing was on the left hand side). I thought that was the right way for left hand threads? Anyways, I returned your pm and I may get that shaft from you soon.




Just looked on the threads for the shaft...Red Loctite......
 
Perfect reason to fill it up with some 20g parts!!! I know theres a few shops out there that do the bastard 16g turbos.
