16G and sourcing oil

Mitsu designed the housing that way for a reason...for all OE turbos that came on the 4G63 the OFH is the best place. There was a lot of science done to make that the preferred spot for oil on the MHI turbos when run with OE parts.
Where is this science, and if there was that much testing done why is the only factory 4G63 turbocharger that is fed from the filter housing built by Garrett while all MHI turbos are head-fed from the factory?

If the OFH is the best place for MHI turbo's then why do all 1g's feed from the head? And Evo's?
I'm defending the head as the proper oil source for pressure and restriction for a MHI center housing.

It seems that no one can track down the oil pressure requirements for a MHI turbo, but apparently it's much less than a Garrett. Mitsu fed these turbos from the head with a restrictor in the line from the factory for a reason....if you venture away from this source, you're risking pushing oil past the turbine seal as well as adding unwanted stress on the journal bearings and turbine shaft due to excessive incoming oil pressure.

Matt has stated above that his brand new Small 16G and FP 18G both smoked when fed from the filter housing on his 1G....if that's not enough reason for anyone to stay with the head as the proper oil source for a MHI turbo, then I don't know how much additional proof you need.

Jusmx point me in the right direction. I would like to know where i can find a bolt to block off the port in my OFH so i can use the head as my oil source and where could i find a line to feed from my head ?

I run mine from the filter housing too... :idontknow:

I was just looking at this line EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts - Oil Feedline Kit (Head Location): Mitsubishi Eclipse 90-99
They have one without the 90 too.

I wonder if that's a good one. I'm assuming I wouldn't need a filter/restrictor with an mhi turbo.

I have not had any problems running mine from the filter housing but I just pulled my turbo off yesterday, so I'm deciding whether I should switch feed lines now.

And yeah, I'll need something to block off the port in my filter housing as well.

Great link house, makes me wish i never included the option in my 2g install kit of the provided oil feed, could have saved me the money and have ordered that oil feed.
Many of my friends that have 2g dsm have been feeding from the OFH with their 16g and have no problems with it. I'm just looking at my options here and try to work with i got.
Are there any restrictors i could use with an oil line that is already coming from the OFH ? That way i don't have to waste more money with another line.

I'm with you. The questions were rhetorical. ;)

You guys could just use the OEM lines off a 1g as they are solid anyway. I'm sure someone has them laying around they could sell you; MachV also sells them new.

1g Turbo Oil Feed Line
JNZ has them even cheaper if you're not in a huge hurry. Search part number MR239830.

Jusmx how to we cap off the port where the old oil feed line goes onto in the OFH ? I haven't found any caps for that hole yet.

Lots of crap here...

If you run a restrictor off the OFH that is properly sized there won't be a problem. I know the t-25 is a different turbo, but Mitsubishi found that with a properly matched restrictor they would be fine. The same would apply to any turbo. The kits to run off the OFH usually have a restrictor, but I don't think much science has gone into them. If I were to get one I would make sure to fix it with a drilled set screw if the size isn't right. I am defending that there is no one proper place to get oil from, as long as you restrict it properly. If you are lazy and just want to slap shit together, just get factory lines and run it from the head.

What about a TD06 20g?

I've ran the oil from the filter housing for 10k on my stock 7bolt motor. The line I had is the same from the ExtremePsi 2g install kit. Once my head was rebuilt, the car never ever smoked.

Now, I have a forged 6bolt with no balance shafts and a ported oil releif valve. I haven't started the car yet because i'm not done putting it back together, but should I switch the feed line to the head?

Bump for answer.
I am looking for a plug to block of the the oil feed line that goes to the filter housing.

3/8 plug at your local hardware store...look in the plumbing where the brass fittings are. I just bought one for my ofh to plug the same hole....I went with a bb turbo so I have to feed from the head.

From what I was told the 16g's are already restricted interanlly, thats why you cannot see into the turbo itself when you look into the oil supply hole. I have had small 16g,evo16g and big 16g and always feed from the ofh.... never had a problem... now I just made the transfer to a pte bb turbo which has to be feed from the head.

I called Extremepsi to ask what they thought about it.
They said it is okay to run any MHI 16g turbo off the OFH. They have had numerous customers run the feed line right from the OFH with out any issues at all.
He said the only time you need to run a oil feed line from the head is when you are using a ball bearing turbo.
I have also noticed that all MHI turbos even the garrett T25 has an internal oil restrictor in the housing.
So I am good to go, just waiting for my lines and turbo to come in next week.
