I wanted to upgrade from the stock T25 to either a 16g or a 14b. What are the necessary upgrades that will allow me to run it at stock boost? Like will I need bigger injectors, fmic, safc/dsmlink, fpr, or a new fuel pump?

You won't need anything to run at stock boost. I would recommend going for a 16G because you can get an install kit for it and it will give you room to increase boost later when you have other supporting mods. I would also pick up some 550cc injectors to help with the added flow rate the 16g has, a walbro 190 or 255(with a adjustable fuel presssure regualtor). Also a tuning device to go with this although you might not need it if you dont plan on running high boost levels. The 14b is a cheap upgrade and you won't be dissapointed in the performance. The most important question is HP goal.

Honestly I just wanted some more power than stock; I'm not sure where I want to be HP goal wise yet. The most important thing is that I find a cost effective measure to speed up my car without blowing a hole in my wallet.

Is it really true I won't have to upgrade anything for the 16g at stock boost?

At stock boost, because of the small step in size between the 16G wheels and the 14B, if you change nothing else the airflow differential is pretty small.

But every setup is different, which is why a WB and a pump rewire are always a good idea

Honestly though without the proper mods and a tune you can't even max out a 14B

I'm changing from a t25 though does that still apply?

I swapped in a 14b and run it around 18 psi. It pulls hard enough to satisfy if you're moving up from a T25. I have a set of 550cc's, 255lph walbro, OER AFPR, and SAFC (because I already had it), K&N filter, Supra Mk4 smic, EBC, 2.25" hard pipe intake, and a 1g BOV. Basically, what people are saying you should get. I tuned to fuel trims at 0 and no knock with an OBD2 scanner, until I can get a UEGO installed.

That said, it is a major improvement! You can't beat it for the price. The 14b is a really good street turbo that spools low and kicks in pretty hard. You will notice a big difference through 3500 to 5000. There are more powerful turbos, but not for $100 or so, and that is MHI quality, not Chinese knock off garbage. I am very happy with my 14b. The next step up has to be a big one, so I'll be doing a 20g with a 7cm hotside, but until then my 14b is plenty of fun. It allows you to upgrade slowly also while still being more fun than a T25.

I found an offer for 350 for an evo mhi 16g turbo and I wasn't sure if I should get that or not? I know that if I get the 16g I won't be able to run it well at all without mods. Would you recommend going slow and building a 14b until I have all the necessary mods for a 16g?

Thanks. So how much should I expect to pay for Lite assuming I'd have to find an eprom 2g manual ecm + socket since I have a 99 eclipse gst.

You can also get EVOflash since you have a 99 its free and you can tune your car using it. I think all you need is a cable to plug it up with and you can have maps downloaded to your car.

Could you explain that to me? I never heard of that? Is that the same as flashing the ecu irreversibly?

I have heard of this, I am looking into it. I think its also called the ceddy modd. Just google "ceddy modd" their is alot about it.

I dont no if you have removed you BCS (boost controll solenoid) restrictor aff yet, but I took mine out and I am at 15 psi on a t25. it looses breath above 5800 but it hold 15 till then then drops to 10 above that. I feel a good bit of diffrence, at least enough to satisfy me untill I know what I want to tune with, and find out how.

I didn't want to break it but I'll look into it :)

Have you used the "Search" feature at all? There are lot of beginner level things you are asking answers for. Not knocking your methods, the quickest way for a response is to ask it in the forum, so long as it is being viewed by others. Pretty much everything you asked for has been answered literally hundreds of times in previous posts. You can literally go to google (without even being on this forum) and type in "what is ____" (fill in blank) and 9x out of 10 you will come up with dsmtuners.com hits. Plus the search feature on the site itself is great. You're picking up a lot of stuff though, so props for being inquisitive and not just going head first into the dark.

as far are coolant/oil lines go, if you have access to 1g stuff, you can just use a 1g oil feed/return line and then use the stock 2g coolant lines. for the turbo outlet, you can combine the stock 1g and the stock 2g lower intercooler pipes to make one that will work on the stock 2g side mount.

dont be afraid to try, just be carefull. Yea its fragile but use a dry wall screw, screw it in untill u feel it getting a little tight the slowly turn and pull. If any one else has a better way feel free to say how. I did it to my car and my buddies.

"project98dsm" is right. Everytime I use google if tunners dont come up put dsm somewhere in their and your good to go.

But everyone was new at one point and personaly I felt good when I would post a qusetion then do whatever I asked about the verry next day.

Yeah I guess you're right. I been extensively looking up this topic but I got more answered straight up asking on this forum then 4 nights of searching dsmtalk, dsmtuners, and google.

Depends on your budget and what you're willing to compromise on. A 16g is more powerful and is highly regarded as a streetable turbo with accessible power at lower rpm. If you have a deal for $300 or less on a real MHI 16g in decent condition, buy it. $350 is about what to expect as normal price on a used MHI. It flows 180cfm (Evo III, "Big" 16g) more than a 14b and will require support to run anywhere near its efficient speed and pressure. You will be constrained to under 10psi until you have the fuel components to supply it with enough gas to not run lean and ruin the motor. Initially, you may get more bang for your buck with a 14b if you can't buy the injectors, fuel pump, AFPR, and a means of controlling the fuel/air ratio within a fairly short period of time. The 14b would allow you to build that stuff up though with no consequences, at your own pace, and still be able to have some fun with it. That is exactly what I am doing. I intend to get a 375-400 hp capable turbo eventually, but because I have the 14b I am in no rush and can get it set up right, but also have enough power to see how it will respond to those mods.

In my opinion, for a stock 2g owner, the 14b is the perfect platform to build up from and is way better than the T-too small.

I am sold on getting a 14b :)
I won't have to port anything right? 2g manifold is solid?

2g manifold is very good for daily driving and lower end torque. It doesn't need any modification to be able to do what you want it to. I ported mine a little, but my head is ported through, as is my exhaust and turbo volute. It was mainly just to smooth the transition to the ported head. Porting the exhaust ring in between the exhaust manifold and the turbo inlet I do recommend though. It'll help the flow through there, and anything that increases flow in the exhaust is a good thing.

No you do not have to port anything at all. I ran a 14b for a long time and had a lot of fun boosting it at 19psi it definitely spools up extremely fast but is limited as far as top end. Overall though, definitely a fun turbo! :thumb: but if you do have the funds to get an Evo III Big 16g do it! I am running one right now and enjoy it even more then the 14b but if your budget is tight go with the 14b and you wont be dissapointed :hellyeah:

Thanks, I'm just looking out for the wallet and bills haha. Now to find a 14b... haha

You should have no trouble finding a 14b. They are all over the classified ads. Just be sure you check out who you are buying from. If they won't allow you to contact them on their phone (text included), insist on using Paypal and having you gift them the payment, and have no buyer or seller feedback, move on to the next....

Thanks for the advice but I thought I couldnt use the classifieds yet because im a new member. Either way those are excellent buyer advice :thumb:

at least get a wideband, then you'll know if your fuel system and ecu is keeping up and making the proper adjustments, but there is a limit and a piggy back system (afc) is an inexpensive mod if your not comfortable with modding the ecu (vlink)
