Alright, so the area leading to the wastegate flap on my friends 1G has a tear, looks terribly rough and I made the call and said that it was in poor health.

His car's suffering a massive boost leak as well at this time (rough idle, car ran fine when maf was unplugged aside from the searching rev)

I've been around DSM's a while, but I'm by no means a turbo guru.

You guys who are handy with the wastegate actuation/boost vaccuum knowledge help me shed some light.

Here's the photos

I figure from that crack and lip on the turbine, that it was allowing creep or some other amount of air too pass. Causing some of the boost issues we are having.

Thats pretty much normal with 14b housings mine looks exactly the same when i pulled it out. I dont know if it actually does harm though but you could always upgrade to a 7cm housing or 16g.

Such housing damage will result in boost being built very slowly but this should have zero effect on how the car actually runs. This should have no direct effect on the air/fuel ratios or anything like that as the MAS will only meter actual airflow being drawn in....so if the wastegate system is not allowing boost to be built, the airflow numbers never change. That in mind, it's entirely possible you have a whole separate issue.

Ross, I have a boost leak tester if you need to borrow it. It is very very unlikely that the turbo damage is causing a bad idle. Also, I've never actually installed a turbo that looked that bad.

Yeah, that means I need to be bringing that 1G up too you.

Regardless, I think this turbo is dead as dead can be.
