14b/16g Hose Setup

I need help setting up my turbo. I think its a 14b, but the blades are stepped so I'm not sure. Anyway, my car is not boosting right now and I believe it is because my hoses are hooked up the wrong way. The wastegate hose is hooked up to the stock boost controller. I've seen it hooked up to the lower intercooler piping on another forum but my licp does not have the nipple for the hose. Where should I hook it up so it will open the wastegate??? I also currently have the wastegate slightly open because if not the car idles and drives like s**t.

if the blades are stepped its not a 14b... what kind of boost controller are you using? just the factory or a manual one?

does it say tdo5 or td04? td05 is 16g, td04 is 13g both "stepped" and if your ic piping has no nipple for bc, you can use the line that goes to your bov. tap it then run it to your bc.
 
Ok so I am currently using the stock boost controller ( the one under the intake).

My wastegate is open because it doesn't open on its own so the car won't run otherwise. I will close it once i get the wg hooked up correctly.

My wastegate and intake are currently hooked up to the stock boost controller and that is why I believe the wg is not opening on its on, and therefore not giving me boost.

I have seen it hooked up to the uicp but mine does not have a nipple for that so was wondering if there was another way for me to hook it up. Someone told me to run a t thing.


Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I don't think you understand what I'm getting at....if the wastegate is open, you're not going to generate boost.

The function of the wastegate is to divert airflow around the turbine, preventing boost from being generated beyond a certain psi. If the wastegate is always open, no pressure will exist between the manifold and turbine wheel- so the turbo will not generate boost.

That first part is confusing me also.. Are you saying that you disconnected the actuator arm to let the wastegate just flap on its own? From what your saying you've probly got a 16g, and you can make your own positive pressure source with a drill and a nipple that you can buy almost anywhere. It sounds like your wastegate took a crap.. If you have an air compressor test it out.
I also told you what to do if you have no nipples for you bc line..
Ok the HOSE coming from your BOV tap that with a T fitting, hook the bottom end of the T fitting down to your bc.

Wrong! You should only route the hoses either from the compressor housing/LICP TO the wastegate. Or, from the compressor housing/LICP to a MBC then from there TO the wastegate.. Never "T'' a line from your BOV to your wastegate!
 
I know thats why im not boosting. My question was where to run the hoses so the wastegate will open on its own. Right now I have the wastegate arm slightly open to let enough air in to run until I can figure out how to have the waste gate function on its own.
 
You CAN run it from whever makes you happy if it's on the intake track. Ideally, you run it from the compressor housing or LICP. If you don't have a nipple there, make one.
 
Ok thank you.. I was just afraid of boost leak from the licp.. does the 16g come with a nipple on the compressor housing automtically??
 
I should. I traded my stock turbo for the one I have in my car. I started with dsm about 6 months ago, so I'm still fairly new. I really like the car so I'm putting a lot of time and effort in learning about it and trying to do the work myself. Does anybody know any good muffler shops or places I can get the hose to my licp installed in los angeles?

Drill, tap and die set, a nipple (you can get from any parts store) and some teflon tape and you can make your own!

Really? That's not how the second sentence of post #1 started out.

My question was where to run the hoses so the wastegate will open on its own. Right now I have the wastegate arm slightly open to let enough air in to run until I can figure out how to have the waste gate function on its own.
Simple- run a dedicated line from a boost source either on the compressor cover or lower intercooler pipe directly to the wastegate actuator.

Again- if your actuator is installed properly and not given a boost source, the turbo is going to make as much boost as it can....not fail to make boost at all.
 
So, today I removed the J Pipe to start the install and found that the licp was loose. It actually came right off of the intercooler. I was definitely suffering from boost leak as well. Any way after following your instructions the wastegate opens and closes properly and i'm boosting normal.

Is the 16g supposed to boost so late? (From what I remember 4-5k rpm.) Also my car is still idling pretty low. (At about 900 rpm). What are the first things to check for?

Yea a loose IC coupler will have a substantial boost leak! haha! Glad to hear your boosting again.. and 900rpm is actually a high idle as opposed to the stock 750rpm idle..
 
I thought it was low because it felt as if it was idling very lopey.. could this be misfire?

You should do a boost leak test. but make sure that all your clamps are tight on your ic piping. You should hit full boost around 3500k, and yes your idle is a bit high @ 900. Should be around 750-800. check plugs and wires too
