okay so tomorrow i plan on pulling my 1.8l to replace it with another 1.8 (long story). I was just wondering if there are any major tricks I need to know. I've done other motors in Camaros and other big cars. My dad said i may need to take of my tranni mounts so i can tip it at on upward angle and slide the motor out? any tips would be greatly appreciated

Some say that pulling the motor and tranny out as one piece is much easier than leaving the tranny in while pulling the motor. Plus, if manual, you should do clutch while it's there staring at you.

After disconnecting the vitals from the motor, you pop the axles out from the tranny, undo the speedo cable from the tranny, undo the shift cables and mounts and lift away.

its a manual 91 laser.....up this is my first 4 cylinder car but tools arent a problem. i work on cars all the time and have changed other motors just never my dsm

clutch was done like a week before the car blew up LOL so i should just pull tranni to? then swap the tranni to the new motor...that would make painting my engine bay easier....(side note.....any one bed liner a engine bay? thought that might work well)

Or, drop tranny first, then pull motor since you already did the clutch.

The front end of the motor sits pretty close to the side to be pulled out by itself and true, can give you a better shot of doing the engine bay if all is pulled out..

good luck - DSM

so i think ima leave the tranni in the car.....have any of u gus done this b4

ok so this is going to be pretty simple. doesnt really matter if you just did clutch or not regardles. you have to swap out the flywheel and clutch to new motor just to be safe. my best opinion would be have a buddy help you take out motor with tranny is alot easier than anything else.(tip) try to put your chain/rop what ever your going to use as close to the timing belt as possible. so with that said your buddy pushes down on the tranny as you lift. sort of like incline to the motor comes out like butter. well wish you luck and keep me updated also sorry for mispelling. ;)

oh and yes ive done like about 60 dsm swaps in total in about 8 months of working in my buddys shop. there very simple but expensive cars. just like women LOL gotta love em. :)

i i took my first run in the car today and it ran and drove great..the motor runs like new.....i will post up pics tomorrow .....but it seems my e brake or parking break stuck on after the car sat......but only the passenger side....any ideas?

..have to go to the caliper mechanism on that side and get the cable off the unit and see if you can run some TriFlo down the cable to slick it up .. or you got a stuck mechanism.

Ya, I saw one kid get his 1.8L out by himself. He got it out,but he ripped the living crap out of the CV joints that goes into the tranny. He didn't tip the tranny down to get the motor up. Plus, he had the lift chain in the middle of the block, so not much incline there. That would have been the reason to lift the two as a whole then.
