I got a friend that has a 94 1.8 and he needs a tranny. What years will work? I was told that it has to be out of a 94. If we have to swap plugs thats ok. I'm not familiar with the 1.8s. Thanks :)

The motor and transmission in my 92 came out of a 94. Both had 1.8 and manual transmission. The motor was swapped then about two weeks later the transmissiom was swapped. I experienced no problems of any kind with either swap. The motor took about 3 hours, and the transmission took about 2.5 hours. Hope this helps. :dsm: :D

The above post discusses MANUAL transmissions which are quite interchangeable. HOWEVER, the original post doesn't specify manual or automatic needs, but since this is the AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION sub-forum, I'll assume that the original poster needs a 94 AUTOMATIC which would make the above post irrelevant.

I don't know too much and am in the middle of a 1.8 automatic tranny mess myself. From what I hear the 91 1.8 was fairly interchangeable but the 93 and 94 1.8's are not.

I just bought an auto tranny for a 1.8 out of a 1994 and am being told that a 94 only fits a 94 and a 93 only fits a 93. The number on my 93 tranny is F4A222 MPE and the one for a 94 is F4A222 MPF5. The guy who sold it to me said it would work but the TCU might need to be changed to the 94 1.8 TCU to work right. If you have a 91 or 92 1.8 tranny, I believe it should be marked F4A222 MPD. Now it may be that they will interchange but I haven't tried it yet, and don't want to waste install/uninstall time.

After I got the 94 tranny, I got second thoughts and my local salvage yards are telling me 93 and 94 trannys are not interchangeable. On Ebay, a company who sells TCU's told me the same thing and further that changing the TCU's won't make them work right.

The guy who sold me the 94 still claims it will work, said he has a 93 in a 94 right now and said he changed TCU's just to be sure, but thinks it would have worked without even changing them.

Here's a site that apparently sells parts for the trannys and their part numbers for 93 and 94 are different. On the other hand, their part number seems to confirm that the 91 1.8 tranny is fairly interchangeable with other years and even 2.0 trannys.

Eclipse Transmission Numbers

I always see the F4A222 numbers listed but rarely if ever see anyone talking about the MPE, MPE1, and MPF5 numbers that follow. Anyone know what the differences might be and/or how I might make a 94 fit into a 93?

Thanks for the reply, Jumpmaster, we have pretty much given up on the car, its a 1.8 :boring: , I did notice the other reply was for a manual :nono:
