ok so i have been searching and the only threads i can find are for 2.0s or turbos and they arent the greatest help. im not even leaving first gear and it bucks once tries to die and if i give it gas it starts running fine again. it has sat all winter and ive just started running it again. before that i had changed the oil, plugs, wires, and fuel filter and drained it of fluid. what could be my problem?

it wont run one notch either other way
Why so is that the ECU is taking over no matter what you do and with it being one notch either way is that the system in going into what's called 'open loop' and the ECU is trying to compensate, and doing so, the system isn't in a balance that the ECU is being programmed to recognize.

Read up on doing base timing with the ECU terminal grounded and I guarantee when you do get the timing right on, that motor will suddenly behave since it's gone into a 'closed loop' system.

Good luck-DSM
