ok, heres my problem. I recently got my 91 talon, ive had a few minor problems with it that i could deal with. Now this happens, driving on the freeway and all of a sudden i lose power and starts smoking!, im close to home so i just limp it home (1/2 mile maybe).
get home and theres oil everywhere, coming out of oil cap. do a compression test and 1,2,3 cylinders have around 150psi and hold it, while #1( closest to drivers side) has 0 psi, spark plug is soaked with oil, i can look down into the cylinder and see oil puddled up on the piston, now my first thoughts are broken oil, compression rings on that cly?

what are your thoughts on this? did a leak down test and air came out the oil cap, rings right?

can replacing the rings re done with engine in car?

Maybe the rings, maybe a broken piston. Usually adding oil to a cylinder with bad rings will up the compression. Since it already has oil on it, I am willing to bet the piston broke.

Compression ring and oil ring are two different things. I would also say a cracked piston, but I would think that there would be other signs like a funny ass noise.

thats what i would be thinking,it sounds normal, i didn't hear any abnormal noises whe this happened, and it sounds normal when running besides onl on 3 cly's.

note also*

the previous owner i got it from called me when he saw the CL ad and said it was the headgasket, and when we first bought it, it was the same way.

but there is no oil in coolant, coolant in oil.

i was talking with a nebighor and he was saying it could also be a HG, and it could have pop'd by a oil port and that letting the oil into the cly's and not allowing it to get compression.

Just like they said it sounds like a broken piston. Maybe a rod is broken and the piston is frozen in place etc. But in this case it's the worse issue. If you think it's the head gasket you might as well pull the head. Either way you if buy a new small block but use the head you will need another head gasket.
But broken piston or rod that's not moving the piston in this case...

sounds like you burned a piston. What grade fuel were you running? mods? Id bet that cylinder is scorched-with luck a hone will work. however, 0 psi is bad-Even bad rings should net you SOMETHING. Id pull the VC and see if you have any bent valves.

91 octane, i already pulled VC and didn't see anything abnormal, im guessing the rings broke completely.

does the compression gauge move at all? Does it flutter? Even burned rings should get you someting. Sounds like a valve is bent or stuck or the pistons got an actual hole in it. regardless, dont drive the car. Oil pouring out the exhaust will catch fire.
