1G No compression in #1 cylinder

I just bought a 1992 eclipse 2.0 N/T with pop-up headlights. I have no idea how much, if any, compression it has but it happened in one day, it was not a gradual decrease it just happened while on the highway. The last owner was driving along and tried to accelerate and it just couldnt pull it off. The car only has 80,000 miles and has good oil in it. Im pretty much guessing that the cylinder is in good condition considering that that wouldnt go bad in one day. What are some possibilities? Its too far from home to drive back and work on so i need to be ready to fix it in one day. Please help.

How do you know there is no compression in cylinder 1 if you just said you don't know?

If you wonder about the compression then do a compression test. You cannot just say something happened with out knowing if it actually happened or not. For all you know a spark plug could have fouled up for some un known reason.

Also if a cylinder lost compression then it usually needs a rebuild BTW...more than a days work.

Sorry, i should have specified that it has been checked by a mechanic but i didnt take it, the previous owner did. What i mean to say is i dont know if its 0 compression or just really low. I just know what cylinder.

Apply air pressure to that cylider via a leak down test and see where it's going so you can start in the right direction.

Yeah i heard about that. Anything but sound from the dipstick tube is head right?

Dipstick tube, and oil cap, yes. There are also other areas it can escape to but those are the two main areas to listen to.

The important thing is you can figure out where exactly your compression is escaping to and you can form a plan of action before you even take anything apart and will help you determine what components are bad. Sometimes a valve will be ever so slightly bent and will look fine when you pull the head, but it will still give low compression once everything is back together.

You can't repair until you fully and accurately diagnose the problem.

Do a compression test on cylinder #1. And if it's a 92, it HAS fixed headlights, unless the previous owner swapped the front end to pop-up lights.

Haha, ive been waiting for someone to contradict me on the headlights... Its a european eclipse. Eclipse's here were pop up till 94. But thanks for the info.

Just make sure that the motor is top dead center on the compression stroke when you try to do a leakdown test. Remember, some noise or slight air movement from the oil cap is normal.

I would suggest starting with a compression test though, make sure you keep the throttle open and let the motor crank 5 times for each cylinder.

i just had the same issue on my 94 and it ended up being a bent intake valve

i had no compression in my 1990 gsx in cylinder 1, and the cause was broken piston ring and bad hg. When driving did you see blue smoke coming out of the exhaust? Also did you dip stick blow and or do you see any oil coming out anywhere. Reason I ask is because I had oil seeping out of my exhaust manifold.

Well from what i've read so far...

1. Do a compression test on all cylinders.

2. Do a leakdown test.

3. Pull the head and replace bent valves and/or blown head gasket.

4. Put her back together properly and start her up, and get on with your life haha.

That is, until something else needs to be replaced
