Hey guys I tried searching but certain key words you know !

So to get to the point: I was gifted 2 transmissions years ago from someone who was having a baby and was parting with all things DSM.

They are a 2G gst trans and a 1G gs trans.

Im finally at that point were I am willing to put on my big boy pants on and try and get familiar with transmissions. I recently taught myself to weld so Im all hoped on confidence now 🫤.

Are any of the parts of either of these 2 transmissions interchangeable with each other or with the W5m33 gsx trans ?

It’s ok if no, but I’m curious mostly because I want to practice on them - rebuild.

Before I ever consider touching my W5

Thanks ☺️

Yes, there are SOME parts that are interchangeable, do I need to make a complete detailed list??

I had Tim come over to look at my cordwood-stacked pile of used 1G AWD W5M33 boxes I had accumulated in the barn.
It turned out I had about every possible variant of 90 / 91-92 / 93-94 stuff.

As it goes; the transmissions I had from a desirable year (92.5+) were assembled with Permatex Ultra Copper and had liquid anti sieze coming out the drain plug. And the 90 stuff I pretty much wrote off as undesirable, suddenly was sounding like the stuff you might be able to bastardize something together with.

This lead to a really really long discussion about many components and I recall the differences breaking down further into production month even across the 5 years of W5M33 1G stuff. (I honestly can't see this as a forum post!)

In summary, I wasn't sitting on this magic core pile that would keep cars on the road forever.
I simply have a bunch of grinding crappy transmissions full of worn out parts and nothing really works with anything else. :)

Ok, let's start with the 2g GST transmission vs the W5M33 transmission....

Parts that you can interchange -- IF you are working with a 1991.6-1999 AWD transmission. The 1989-1991.5 W5M33 variant I will cover as well.

First off. The F5M33 GST transmission gearset, specifically, the input shaft, intermediate shaft, output pinion shaft, front diff ring gear, front differential itself, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th gearset is NOT interchangeable.

The shift rails are also different in length, but the shift rail ends are interchangeable with the AWD, along with the shift selector assembly.

The 1st/2nd hub and slider assembly IS interchangeable with 1990.6-1999 AWD transmissions. The single synchro on 1st gear, and the double synchro on 2nd gear is interchangeable. The 1st/2nd shift fork IS NOT interchangeable as it has a different curvature than the AWD version. It will be stamped "F5M".

The 3rd/4th hub and slider assembly on the 2g GST transmission is the same large diameter synchro design as the 1992.6-1999 AWD transmissions, along with the 3rd/4th large diameter synchros. The 3rd/4th shift fork is a 3-hole design and it IS interchangeable if it is used with this year range AWD gearset. Note that the 3rd/4th hub and slider keys will have an identification mark on the backside of the key that must be used with that specific hub and slider.

The 5th gearset is not technically interchangeable with the AWD, but it can be made to work in an AWD transmission case with a little modification. The intermediate shaft 5th gear has 4 identification holes on it whereas the AWD version does not have these holes. The offset height is also different, but if you use a small shim (the rear differential pinion preload shims can be used between the shaft and the 5th gear) to get the correct offset height with some measuring, you can make it work. You MUST also use the FWD input shaft 5th gear needle bearing sleeve as the offset height is different on that piece. You would then use the matching input shaft FWD 5th gear with the FWD 5th intermediate gear. The synchros are the same, along with the 5th/Reverse hub and slider assembly. The 5th/Rev shift fork CAN be interchangeable, but only if the correct 5th/Rev shift rail is being used. There is a variation of roll pin orientation between the 1991.6-1996 vs 1997-1999 components. The earlier ones have the roll pin orientation center-lined up with the shift rail detents, whereas the 97-99 offsetted the roll pin hole to the LEFT of the shift rail detents, so then you have to look at which 5/R shift fork you are using to use the correct shift rail with it. The 5th gear needle bearing is also interchangeable.

For bearings, the input shaft inner and outer tapered roller bearings, along with the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th needle bearings are the same as the AWD. The intermediate shaft inner tapered roller bearing is the same as the AWD, but the OUTER bearing is different and not interchangeable. The output pinion shaft and front differential bearings will be different.

The reverse idler gear, reverse idler lever and key, reverse idler lever bolts are the same as 1992.6-1999 AWD transmission.

The reverse lockout bracket and detent between the 3rd/4th and 5th/reverse shift rail is the same. As well, the reverse light switch, and reverse lockout bolt, and reverse idler shaft retainer bolt is the same. The bellhousing case fasteners are the same as the AWD, but only those. The shift lever arm ("L"), and shift lever arm bracket is the same as 1995-1999 AWD transmissions, along with the shift selector assembly inside the transmission (the one with the counterweight on it). The shift rail detent plugs, balls and springs are also interchangeable. The case studs for the passenger side mounting bracket are also interchangeable. The magnet tray in the bellhousing is also interchangeable.

The intermediate shaft oil guide in the bellhousing below the intermediate shaft inner tapered roller bearing is the same as AWD. The main case black plastic oil guide is also the same as 1995-1999 AWD.

On the 5th gear cover, the reverse cone, machine screws and reverse wave spring are also interchangeable with the AWD 1990-1999 applications.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now for the F5M22 transmission... It looks like a 1990 based on the shift lever arms. Those lever arms are only interchangeable with 1990 AWD transmissions and shift cable bracket and shifter assembly / shift cables.
Confirm the model number, it looks like a F5M22-2-VPZS. It will be marked on the identification spot on the top of the bellhousing between the top two mounting bolts.
Inside, there are much fewer parts that are interchangeable.

The black axle seals are MD707184, which is the same as the right axle seal on the W5M33 transmission.
The bellhousing case fasteners are the same as the ones on the W5M33.
The reverse cone and fasteners are the same as the ones on the W5M33.
The 1st/2nd hub and slider springs are the same as the W5M33 5th/rev hub and slider (small diameter).
The intermediate shaft end shaft snapring is the same as the W5M33 intermediate shaft snapring (obsolete part, keep it).
The intermediate shaft 1st and 2nd gear needle bearings are the same small diameter ones used on the W5M33 input shaft 3rd/4th gearset.
The 2nd gear synchro is a MD744782 that is used on DSM AWD 1990-1992.5 3rd/4th gears, and can be used on 1991.6-1999 AWD 5th gears.

The input shaft 3rd/4th gear synchros are also MD744782 or variants of depending on the year, and interchange with DSM AWD 1990-1992.5 3rd/4th gears, and can be used on 1991.6-1999 AWD 5th gears.

The 3rd/4th hub and slider assembly is a small diameter design that crosses over to 1989-1992.5 AWD DSM transmissions and uses the early style hub and slider springs and keys (without an identification mark), and can also be used on 1991.6-1999 DSM AWD transmission 5th/Rev hub and sliders (the springs, keys and the slider itself -- the hub is not interchangeable with the 5/R hub).

The 5th gear needle bearing is interchangeable with the W5M33 1989-1999 versions.

The 3rd/4th shift fork is the earlier version 2-hole fork and does interchange with 1990-1992.5 AWD transmissions.

The shift rail detent plugs / springs / balls are interchangeable.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That is pretty much the gist of it.

Wow 😮 that is beyond info - thank you so much !!!!

Most of what can be salvaged, I assume are parts that can be purchased, correct like bearings, forks, synchros ?

Confirm the model number, it looks like a F5M22-2-VPZS.
