Edmonton,
I was driving my car home yesterday and passed someone, when I hit full boost (16psi) I heard what sounded kind of like a large release of air. There is alot of smoke coming from the exhaust pipe now, and the car won't boost, the turbo spools just as fast as before but stops at 0 psi. The smoke from the exhaust isn't black or white, just grey and doesn't smell out of the ordinary. I've done a compression check and its 175 across, replaced my vaccum lines, all new T-bolt clamps, and I've been going through the EMS trying to find something out of whack.

My friend lent my boost leak tester to someone else and I'm waiting to get it back right now, hopefully that's the problem. But I've only owned this car for 5 days, and it's my first experience with a MAFless DSM, so I'm unsure how differently it would act with a boost leak. It smokes alot and burns alot of fuel, but it also smokes the most at idle. If anyone else with a speed density car has any experience with this please enlighten me.

This isn't the car in my profile, it's mods are:
- JDM 6-Bolt
- HKS 272/272
- HKS Cam Gear
- HKS Valve Springs
- Ross Pistons (9.0:1) .020 over
- Eagle Rods
- Balance Shaft Removed
- Cometic Headgasket
- ARP Head and Main Studs
- Energy Suspensions Motor Mount Inserts
- Garrett T3/T04E 50-Trim
- Coated 2G Exhaust Manifold w/External Wastegate Neck
- TiAL 46mm Wastegate
- TiAL 50mm Blow-Off Valve
- BIG Bar and Plate Front Mount Intercooler
- 785cc Injectors
- Walbro 255lph Intank
- BJ's Sheet Metal Intake Manifold
- Mustang 75mm Throttle Body
- Mustang IAC Valve
- 3" Intake Pipe with K&N Filter.
- 3" Stainless Steel Downpipe
- 3" High-Flow Cat
- Mechanical Boost Activated Dump System
- Stock Cat-Back Exhaust!!!

My guess is the turbo blew. Have you pulled the intake off to inspect it? That is what happens usually when it won't boost and is smoking.

Steven

Two things immediately spring to my mind: Ginormous boost leak or the wastegate actuator arm fell off the wastegate flapper post. Since there's an external WG, that's out, though. Check for turbo shaft play anyway, just to make sure.

I did pull of the intake, there is no shaft play what-so-ever, and no visible oil in the compressor side.

your mod list say's stock cat back exhaust system.. thats kinda wack.. maybe it could be an issue with your wastegate.. but smoke is showing there is a problem somewhere.. spend some more time diagnoseing it..

It does have a stock cat-back, but it also has a dump setup that opens at 3psi. Stupid setup but I haven't had time to change it yet.

So let me get this straight, you have 2 tial 46mm wastegates on the downpipe past the turbo? I mean to control boost you need to remove exhaust prior to going into the turbine housing... is this your way of doing a very expensive 3"cutout? because someone correct me if I'm wrong but that is not a very efficient way to control your boost since it's already way past the turbo. I don't know maybe I'm not seeing something but your setup is definetly unique to say the least.

Wow thats a interesting setup. They should have just bought a e-cutout.

With speed density you are only measuring what actually enters the engine, so it wont be running rich when you get a boost leak. You would most likely never know you had a boost leak with speed density unless you pressure test it.

From what you described you either have a giant boost leak, or blown turbo.

definetly unique to say the least.

Indeed. Wow... WTF

If you don't mind, I'm just gonna save that pic for posterity. Might come in handy someday. :)

Defently a unique setup. So if I get this straight you have something else to control the boost? & he has mounted the 2 tial WG's to open at 3 psi to act like an exhaust dump, basically trying to make the car a true sleeper.

Check your actual front mount to see if it cracked or a plate was blown open. Might sound retarted but similiar thing happened to me a few months back. I just started to boost maybe alittle over 10psi and i hear a loud psssshhhh while i was on the gas and all of a sudden my car just dies. Car would start but it would blow like you said gray smoke and it kept dieing. I was around the block from my house so i was able to drive it, only if i kept giving it gas. At first i couldnt see anything wrong with the car b/c it was too dark at night. Next morning while walking to the car i saw the front plate on the side of the Front mount blown open. I duck tapped it temporarily so i could drive it to the welder.

Sounds most def like a boost leak somewhere

I remember reading a post about that; it might have been yours or another car. I considered bringing it up, but thought people would think I was crazy. It's not every day you hear about an intercooler blowing apart. The other thing I was thinking was maybe the sheet metal intake manifold welds broke. If I remember right, the older styles of the Magnus intake had a problem with that.

This is correct. The 2 Tial 44mm have nothing to do with controlling boost they just open at 3 Psi and act as an open down pipe. The previous owner that did the mod seemed to think it was a cool set up, seems like an exspensive set up to me. It will be removed in due time.

So you have 2 46mm gates post turbo, What about for actualy boost control? What are you using?

There was an HKS electronic boost controller but it is faulty so right now he is using the 16 Psi spring in the 46mm wastegate mounted off the exhaust manifold.

Well, I know I for one laughed at the movie, but it's not so funny when it happens to you... I blew the weld on my intake manifold, ginormous boost leak, so I'll pull that off and weld it right now and update later. Thanks for your input guys, and I for one hate the down pipe setup, I think it's a waste of two expensive parts, and the car is choking on spoolup when an open exhaust should help the most, it will be changed soon enough.

So I was right? Wow... that came out of left field, too. Get pics, I wanna see!! :D

So he has a total of 3 Tial 46mm.... now that's some cash on exhaust components. I would personally would like to see some pics of the whole car because if he went so deep on wategates I'm assuming the rest of the car has to be cherry

There is 1 46mm off the exhaust manifold and 2 44mm off the down pipe. Here are some pics the previous owner sent:

The outside of the car is nice but the engine bay can use a bit of a clean up and organizing.

dude, selling ONE of those alone would make up more than enough to weld both those holes and weld an e cut out there.

wait, are you the owner, or is na turbotalon?

Good to hear you found the source of your problem :thumb: The car looks bad ass, really like the rims. I've seen the car before, wasn't it listed on the ca.dsm site?

He did find the car on there yes. So after I welded up the intake manifold and fixed that we get everything back together start up the car and she is still smoking like a bi***. So we do a boost leak test again find a small leak but nothing major so we move on to taking the turbo and wastegate off. Sure enough the turbo is done. When we checked for shaft play there was none but we also failed to notice that the wheels wouldn't spin at all. I guess we fixed one major problem though while finding the real one.

Wow.. that is really messed up. Glad everything got straightened out (so far). :)
