I was driving home from my gs's house the other night. The car was driving fine with the big16g I had put on a couple days before. I was running it on low boost and taking it easy trying to break all the new shit in. that morning i hear a slight tick in the motor, but it was no louder than lifter tick. throughout the day the ticki slowly turned into a loud knock. it gets worse as im driving, next thing i know i hear a loud pop from the motor, so i shut off the engine thinking the timing belt broke. nope it was ok. So i try to drive it home and it keeps dying on me and the tick is really bad. My first thought was that a lifter had collapsed but i replace all 16 and it's still doing it. it idles almost normal, oil pressure is good, doesn't overheatstarts right up still.. anybody know what this could be? i posted a video with sound above of it.

P.S. - the "smoke" you see in the video is just oil burning off of the exhaust manifold. I was running it with the valve cover off at first trying to find the noise.

Just a thought pull the valve cover and see if all valves are resting on the lifters evenly?
If you have a boost gauge, Id check to see if the needle was bouncing around at idle,
Like a burned valve, only bent and not sealing all the way. Or if your mileage is high, you might have a cracked or broken valve spring. But the engine vacuum would tell you if you had that, the needle on the guage wouldn't be steady.

Those are just some experiences I've had in the past, When my dsm made that sound, the wrist pin wore out in the piston, knocked like crazy, Then while trying to find the diagnose the noise in the driveway, piston went to high in the bore, piston rings got stuck above the block, then the connecting rod pulled out of the piston, with the piston stuck on the top. Needless to say that was the last revolution of that crankshaft, and bent two valves too!

Maybe this will help, maybe it wont, Get a quart of gear oil 80-150 some thick stuff, pour it in and see if it gets any quieter, 5 bucks lets u know if you have oil Clarence issues.:talon:

the lifters are fine,But I did replace them all anyway and it didn't make a difference, tried the thick oil trick.. no difference either. the conclusion most people I've talked to is that the tensioner went bad, timing jumped a tooth or so and the piston made contact with a valve and bent it so it wont close completely and that is the knocking I'm hearing now. but wouldn't that have bent valves on more than 1 cylinder?

The Video Makes The Noise Sound Like A Rod Knock, Bent Valve Maybe But Not Likely. Great Idea Checking The Boost Guage While Running If The Exhaust Valve Is The Problem. I Think It Sounds Like The Noise Is In The Lower End, And Chances Are That The Cylinder Is Not Hurt At All Some Honing(sp?) May Straighten It Out. My Guesstimate Is The Piston/rod Is The Culprit. If The Head Is Off, And Again, If My Theory Is Correct The Piston Will Appear Slightly Tweaked Maybe Even Cracked.
Another Great Idea Is To Remove The Cams, This Wil Allow All Of The Valves To Close. Then Pressurize Each Cylinder, Or At Least The Cylinder In Question #1. Then All You Have To Do Is Get A Helper To Listen To The Exhaust Pipe For Air Leaking, Would Be Exhaust Valve Probem. Air Coming From Throttle Body, Intake Valve Is The Problem. Air Leaking From The Drian Plug, Big Problem Piston Or Something Worse. Air Getting In The Cooling System, Head Or Head Gasket Or Damaged/cracked Cylinder Wall. Sounds Like A Pain In The Butt, But It Will Help.

If you still have your old oil filter around cut it open and see if the engine made metal. You might get a smattering from cutting it open but if a bearing is coming apart there will be no doubt.

I have heard t-belt tensioners make a sound like that, when they are totally wasted. and not consistent like your problem, pull the cas connector, and crank it over to see if still makes the noise cranking, then after that pull the spark plugs out and crank it over again to see if it still makes the same noise!

I just finished a 6bolt build and im having the same problem, very loud tapping sound that started slowly. Everynow and then it would knock then progessivley got worse over the course of 2 days or so. Sounds like the top end on my car also. When you ran the car with no valve cover on, did you get a crazy super soaker stream of oil out of your head that went high enough to hit your hood? My DSM friends say thats not normal, but I'm the only one with no balance shafts.

Well I was reving it today to find the problem...threw a rod out of the back of the motor LOL. Well dont look at it as breaking down, it's a chance for upgrading. E3 motor time.
