Is the GSX big brake kit pretty good or is it an area worth upgrading? If so, what sort of experiences have you all had with your brake upgrade kits? (I know this is a subjective question)

I just picked up a 98 GSX and the brakes vibrate at moderate to high speeds. I believe it is a warped rotor and I am considering just fixing it. Before I drop the money to fix it, I am considering whether or not I should just upgrade my brakes (calipeers, rotors, pads, braided hoses) all the way around now. If the factory ones are considered to be pretty good, then I will just stick with them instead.

Right now, I have factory stock wheels/tires. I plan to get 18x8 rims which will probably increase the weight some. If I am careful, hopefully not too much.

I drive it as a daily driver, but like to do a little backroad driving / mountain driving. Coming down a windy mountain road can give the brakes a workout.

Thanks,

A fairly inexpensive way to upgrade is with the package from www.turboimport.com
it has rotors, pads, lines, and fast shipping!

you dont have to go with slotted and dimpled, you can just get slotted if you prefer.

I got my setup from them, and then augmented it with some Motul Dot4 fluid from a local shop. It took about 4 hours to install with the lines and a bleed to the system, well worth it!

SeattleGST,

Thanks for the reply. That looks like it might be a real good middle ground solution. Slightly bump up the performance of my existing GSX big brakes w/o having to spend a grand for a third party big brake kit.

So... in general, do people feel that the stock GSX big brake kit is OK? I don't really know since I bought mine used with bad brakes.

Unless you're planning on doing prolonged road course work, big brake kits are a waste of money for the 2G AWD. Spend money on things like Carbon Kevlar pads, use DOT4 fluid, get braided stainless steel lines, and step up your tires to better traction. Bigger discs and bigger calipers aren't really worth the money for a street car that's not even going to see glowing rotors.

"Glowing rotors"... you got a lighting kit in your wheels? ROFL... Just kidding. I know what you meant.

Thanks for the info.

Just to make sure it is clear. The car already has a big brake kit on it. The GSXs com with the Mitsubishi Big Brake Kit... The question is whether or not this kit is any good or not. Sounds like most people are happy with the stock big brake kit once the fluid, pads, and brake lines are upgraded.
