I've never had a problem with police in my area (Pittsburgh, PA.)

Shit, I'm running an open downpipe, which many of you know is ridiculously loud, and cops barely glance at me. I think that they think my car just has something wrong with it

The snow isn't that bad, I drove my car all winter long.

Potholes are a problem, but even so, there are ways of getting around them.

All in all, I don't PA is too bad a place to be modified.

Thats cuz you drive like an old woman ! dont deny it either remember the other night ? :p

and your exterior isnt as modded as most are thinking yaknow ? cops look for wings and stuff like that ya know ?

Damn you guys got it rough I feel for ya. I live in Southern IN (about five minutes from Louisville KY) and there really is no problems with cops. I run no exhaust and get by cops all teh time and never have any problems. Another thing I love is being able to go to Shell and pump Turbo Blue straight outta the pump right into the Excel.

Maybe so, but I get better gas mileage than you, and you're almost stock.

also depends on what part of Pa. small town cops harass the imports and even the muscle cars for lack of anything else to do. like my town, very hilly area, hell I live on top of a mountain. when the weather calls for snow 2-3 its not in inches, its in feet!

my car will get rims, a SLIGHT drop if that, and thats depending on the williamsport area when I move here in the next week...

typically, if you are modding your car a great deal, stay away from northern states if you want to actually drive you car. you can avoid fines and cops if you're smart. can't avoid weather...

Here's what a CO State Patrol supervisor said on a CO car forum:
"Here's the deal with cops and stuff like.....
-illegal exhaust
-illegal suspension

For those two things......the only time you are going to get hassled about it is if.....
-the cop is really board
-the cop is a traffic cop, and is tired of all the speeding tickets, reckless tickets, following too close, unsafe lane changes, DUI's, careless driving, and so-on.....
-someone who had an illegal exhaust or illegal suspension really pissed him off once

What I am trying to say here is that you guys are worrying about the small stuff. This seems to be a big topic on this site about every 3 months, but to be honest with you.....most cops make a stop for these violations more like about once every 6 months. And its usually because the cop is just board and wanting to make a contact, not write a citation. Now every once in a while, there will be the cop who has a hard on for these violations......"

Colorado is awesome.

The worst state hands down is California second is New york.the coastal states are just plain lousy.

Iowa isnt bad if you are in the cities, but god help you if you drive through any small towns. I was driving through one of the burbs and I got pulled over because I had a fast looking car even though I got passed by a VW bug who was in a hurry. The cop was an ass and gave me a speeding ticket. I fought it in court and the cop lost because he refused to allow me to see the radar. He also made me pop the hood to show him I wasnt using anything illegal. WTF? many people I have talked to get pulled over in the burbs because they drive performance cars.
The streets here suck if you drive on any side streets.

i think mckooter said it best-
Maine because the roads suck, there are potholes everywhere huge bumps, and the cops are  ridiculous
so yeah my vote goes for MAINE

Southeast coast is pretty good. I dont have any problems here in NC. And I know most laws are even more lienent in SC.

Texas isn't too bad. We get 93 octane and the cops aren't too bad. Did get a ticket for not signaling a lane change. Turns out the cop was following me because I was driving an import. He even told me that. A$$. However, they did pass a law that is REAL stricit on street racing. If you are caught 1) your car is impounded, 2) you lose your license for one full year, 3) at the end of that year you MUST complete 80 hours(!) of community service to get it back. Just more incentive to be faster than the other guy I guess. Roads stay in pretty good shape. Where I live has an air force base so we do get a lot of young retards that make our cops kinda edgy. Overall, not bad.

NY didn't used to be bad, but the new emission law a pain in the back side. The cops are a bunch of lazy bastards with nothing better to do then pick on our cars. I got a ticket yesterday for my stock turbo wing dispite telling the cop otherwise.... i'm gonna move down south were they have better things to do like crack down on meth heads.....ahahahaha

all I have to say is, there was a cop staked out in front of my house waiting for me to come home today. luckly I was in the minivan, but when I went to talk to him, he said someone in the area reported an excesively loud black car driving around. guess what has been running for three days? I haven't even been driving fast since I hit fuel cut every time I try to. If you think cali is bad, try living in the rich parts of cali, where everyone has nothing better to do than report you for every move you make, ON YOUR OWN PROPERTY TOO.

car too loud, airsofting, using my angle grinder on a sunday, too many people over, (not too loud, too many people over), too many cars parked by my house, basically everything you could think off. rich people suck.

Cleveland OH is the DSM town of the Gods. We have no state standards for vehicle safety. We have only three real equipment laws: loud exhaust (but no decibel limit, so it's he-said-she-said :( ), tint (not as strict as other states), and front plates. And it's legal to have your front plate securely mounted anywhere visible in the front of the car. So I have mine in suction cups on the windshield, since front plates only function to help them aim their radar/lidar (laser) guns. Speed trap tested, traffic court judge approved.

Nobody cares about that shit anyways unless you're in Linndale or Bratenahl, or unless you're mouthy to the officer. The highway patrol are dicks, but you'll never see them in any place but rural interstates, which are too truck-clogged to be fun anyways.

You can mod your car however you want, and if your mods fail you, Shepherd Racing and Buschur Racing are close enough to be a free tow if your have AAA Gold. The suburbs occasionally bust street races. In Cleveland, they don't go looking for it but will go through the motions if they catch you, and probably won't show for the court date anyways. There's almost an unspoken agreement between the racers and the CPD that we're fine if we keep away from open businesses and residents. Thanks to the collapse of almost every employer in town, we have tons of places where there's not a soul around.

but although you not allowed to lower your car , you guys do anyways and when you do , the cops dont come and take a hammer to your bumper to show you should not have lowerd it. you might get a ticket. we have to Pay for a new bumper or chin spoiler or paint job ya know ?

umm its not illegal to lower a vehicle in CA........

it is however illegal for the lowest part of the body to be LOWER than the lowest part(lip) of the RIM.

but yeah, as far as performance, id say CA is the worst. Texas(namely dallas/ft worth area) id say is the new capitol for car modifying. anywhere you have 600hp cobras, 500hp LS1's and insanely modded dsm's, honduhs and anything else, is a badass place to live. and emissions, there will be hell to pay before texas lets that happen. itll cecede from the union again before submitting to a federal emissions mandate.

though CA isnt that bad either. come emissions time it just means you stick everything stock back on, visual is the hard part, as most of us who mod our dsm's know how to tune, and passing a sniffer(even some running cams and NO cats) have had no trouble. its visual that kills you(misrouted vac lines for MBC's, intake piping, fmic's, fuel regulators, vaper injection solenoids, etc).

When I lived in West PA I'd only been followed a couple times, but it's been late night when the bars are letting out and shit. I noticed more cops when WYOtech opened a couple years ago about a half hour away. Potholes there suck ass, though. PA has the worst roads in the country... at least that was the stat a couple years ago. I think that makes it bad for modded cars.
Having a 1g in west PA is great, cops don't really look at it if it's still stock exterior, even if you have tons of performance shit done to it, running an external... they probably just think its a pos like most people have in that economically depressed shithole. LOL

I did notice two posts about NY and tickets for spoilers.... whats this about?

Oh, and way to bring a thread back from the dead.

Ok i have to throw my two cents in. Md where i am from, isnt too bad about mods at all. Really its pretty good. But i am moving to connecticut tomorrow and the number one reason why? No vehicle inspection. thats right tell your friends. Their emission stations have been pretty lax too.

im not sure about the other PA guys here, but the only thing i know of that sucks here is the roads. there only defense about the roads is that we go through harsh winters and harsh summers, so it will just happen again next year. ive driven across this state at least 7 times and i can say that cops dont give a shit here, at least staties. local cops dont really give a damn about anything unless drugs are involved. i personally know a whole fleet of state cops in my area and out near altoona that wont even think about pulling anyone over unless they are going triple digits. and inspections arent that bad, ive done them before, its only a list of about 20 things to check, mainly lights, rust holes, tires, and instrument panel. so i dont know about the other guys, but pa is awsome when it comes to cars, besides the roads

yes, quite a dead thread to bring back

Verona, Wisconsin is def. a GOOD place. Kid at my school has an old farm truck with like, a straight pipe on it and thats it. It is soooooo loud, copps don't do anything.

But hey, this town was voted Hometown USA, so most people here are nice.

PA really isn't that bad except for the roads. The cops don't normally pull you over for stupid things, although I do know some people who have. The cops(at least in my area) aren't ones to "check for illegal parts" like others. Our inspection however DOES suck. They check everything imaginable. My dad used to own an inspection garage and for little petty things that normally wouldn't pass, he'd let slide. There were still people who bi*ched but hey..its the law. luckily he's out of the business now where they're doing emissions and considering laws for modded suspension or body moldings to be illegal.

pa definitely has some of the most stringent inspection laws i have ever seen.

did you know that on the plymouth prowler, the fender flares they have on it, had to be put on so it could be in accordance with pa state inspection? they had to redesign it so that the wheels weren't sticking out of the wells, and (from what i'm told but i could be wrong) if they didn't change it they couldn't have sold it in PA, only state that gave them a problem.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the police CAN search your car without a warrant. That's because it's deemed easily movable evidence. So if they pull you over on suspicion of a broken law (or are harassing you on some exhaust ticket) they have the ability to search your car for other illegal things. You can bi*** about how it's against the constitution, but that's the law. :thumbdown

that is 100% incorrect.

the only way they can search a car is when they have a warrant, you give permission, or they see something illegal such as a gun or drugs in plain view. if there's a state law where you live where that's the case, it's time to file a lawsuit.

and laser, no not until i got to the end after quoting someone else haha.
