I have been hunting down a shifting issue with my car since may. This is going to be a long one but I would appreciate any help as I am completely baffled.

Backstory: bought a complete 92 AWD that had a blown motor. Swapped in a good motor. Took the car for a drive around the block and found that the trans was shifting like complete crap. 1-2 upshift would grind and the throw seemed like it needed to be longer to grab 2nd gear. 2-3 upshift would grind TERRIBLY. The previous owner said that this trans was not factory. I figured the trans was toast so I bought a new (used) 92 trans that was supposedly in good working order. I went to swap everything in and my tcase won't fit! Turns out the trans that was in there was a 22 spline! So I grab my back-up 23 spline tcase and put everything back together then I notice that the shifter doesn't appear to be in the proper neutral position so I pop the shift boot off and wouldn't you know the cables are dual adjustment type yet it has the smaller 91.5+ bracket on the trans. :hmm: WTF

So I try to adjust it as best that I can but it still just doesn't seem quite right. Go around the block and I'm having the same exact issue minus the 1-2 upshift not fully 'grabbing' the gear but the trans still grinds on the 1-2 upshift and grinds really bad on the 2-3 upshift. AHHHH! 3-4 and 4-5 and reverse shift PERFECTLY Here is my question: are these 90 cables the cause of my issues? Or does this sound more like a trans issue? I was under the impression that 90 cables wouldn't even come close to fitting on a 91.5+

Anyways,I went ahead and bought some new single adjustment type cables, part number MB659866. Hopefully this cures my issue.

It should also be noted that the cables that I just removed from the car had the blue ring around the area that it mounts to the floor in the passenger compartment. I thought the blue ring was for 91+ and the red was for 90?

I'm so confused. Why would a 91.5+ have the blue ring and two adjusters?

Now I am super confused. MachV shows the blue as the 91+ and ExtremePSI shows the 91+ as red.

The bottom line is - I think I should have single adjustment type cables. The car has the 91+ bracket and the 91+ shifter assembly and a 91+ 23 spline trans.
