Hey guys, I plan on replacing all the timing components and the head gasket and studs this winter. The main reason I am doing this is that i'm getting a decent amount of oil in my coolant and loosing coolant so I am thinking head gasket and the fact that it's maitenance that could probobly only help me in the long run. Also, my car has a 1g head on it and (I think there could be some bent valves in it) it's on a 2g block so my plan is to buy a 2g head with new valve seals on it from my friend with the intake manifold. For the gasket I plan on using an oem composite and then arp studs. What else should I replace while doing this project? Also for a timing belt should I use oem or are any of the aftermarket ones just that much better. I have done hours of research on this topic and find mixed reviews on everything.

dont forget about bs belt idler/tensioner pulleys for tbelt and bs belt and tensioner for the tbelt

Belts tensioners, pulleys water pump. Gaskets while your there and seals, it would suck to do all that work and have the oil pump seal, and gaskets start leaking.

On the timing belt I would make sure its a gates(from a parts store not sb or extreme) or an oem mits belt. Do not get the cheapest one you can get!

Alright. Also, I am swapping the 1g head that is on my 2g block off for a 2g head and I will need to swap the 2g cas that is on the 1g head now to the 2g head so I will need to mess with ignition timing correct? I think I understand how the base timing works but then I am not all that familiar with the ignition timing with the cas. That requires a timing light correct?

You shouldn't need a timing light. Look up 1g head swap on a 2g and just undo what they did witch I think you just switch a wire to the coil or swap plug wires around not to sure on witch on but its one of them.

1G CAS On 2G

I would just put the 1g cas on the 2g!

Depends on if the 2g head is from a 95-96 or 97-99. If it is 97 then you will not need to do anything with any firing order or the base timing since there is no way to adjust the 2g sensor. If it is a 95-96 head then you will need to tie it into your 97 sensor and then swap the wires on the coil and also the injector wires on the ecu. It is not hard to do so just take the time to do it right and you will be much happier in the long run

Well because right now it has the 97-99 cas on the 1g head and I didn't think I would have to do any wiring stuff for the swap as far as firing order and stuff like that. I was just going to take it off the 1g head and onto the 2g head.

I'm not doing a 6 bolt swap though. I am just taking the 1g head that is on the car with a 2g cas on it already off the car and putting a 2g head on the car and want to put the same cas on the 2g head.

And thank you chaggard27 for clearing that up. I was just looking to simply swap the sensor onto the head that is going on the car. So there is nothing I will have to do to the ignition timing then?

No just put the cas of the 1g head on the 2g head. Then your good!!

And whats the deal with finding these gates timing belts for 35 some dollars and the online parts stores like extremepsi and maperformance charging over 100? Is it supposed to be a race quality belt versus an economy every day type belt? A lot of people seem to like gates but I'm not sure if there is a difference between the 2 belt prices and if they are different belts.

Get a oem belt if you are unsure, 100 bucks? Ive ran for years on belts that werent from the factory, ran my cars hard tensioner and pulleys was the culprit rather than my belt just breaking. Find a kit, with all of it that should do you.

Thats the kevlar gates belt the one I posted about is just a standard rub belt just better than a cheap ass belt. And yes they are two different belts. Ont is O' Reillys brand witch is the master pro for $32.12 with a 90day warranty and the gates from O' Reillys is $35.89 with a 1yr warranty.
