first of all my water pump is leaking so i am replacing the pump and timing belt.
my questiuon is how much more work will it be for a mechanic to change the head gasket.
i say this because a mitsu mechanic said he will do my water pump and timing for 100 bucks if i bring the parts. but once i told him about doing the head gasket he started talking about charging me 500 for the work.

Its not THAT much more work. $500 isn't too unreasonable but if he is asking $100 for a tb change, and then wants to bump to 500 to do the h/g, that is kinda crazy. if you are even somewhat mechanically inclined, i suggest doing it yourself. I did my own head swap as my first major repair and it taught me alot, the internet would be your friend! ROFL

i did my timing belt once. it was my first big job too. but i work in the mitsu dealer and the car is here so i thought of letting someone do the whole job correctly and seeing how they do it so i can learn a little better. also i dont have the time since i go to school and then i have to go to work.

Hey...

If you want to learn more about your car, I suggest you do the job yourself. I was in your position about 8 months ago. I was looking for a reputable shop to do my head job, etc because I had a slight leak in my head gasket. I was quoted over 900.00 for parts and labor, BUT, I opted to do it myself, because with that 900 bux, I ended up buying good parts like waterpump, gasket set, ARP head studs, and a new Head from clear water cylinder head...

I ended up doing it at the hobby shop on base because they have all the tools and nice clean stalls for 2 bux an hour... Since I was by myself, I had to use an engine hoist to left my head off...

there's a good write up on removing the head off a 4G63.. I followed that partly, and just did whatever was easiest my way...

I HIGHLY SUGGEST REMOVING YOUR HOOD when doing this.. and also buying a decent Headgasket! If I could do it all over, I would have stuck a cometic head gasket in there rather than a composite stock type gasket... but I've been boosting 20psi for the past couple months with ARP head studs, and I've been fine..

Good luck!

Mark

I might add,

Go to Vfaq and print out the timing best install.
Go to the archived write ups here on dsmtuners and print out "mini engine rebuild, and head job"

those will help you.. I've had my eclipse for a little over a year, I've done a head swap, timing belt, water pump, clutch job, tranny swap with the help of vfaq and tuners.. Turbo and suspension installs were self explanatory...

well that is what i was thinking of doing i was thinking off getting my car into one of the stall here in the shop and doing all this by myself. the only problem is that i don't have my tools here. all my tools are my dads garage. plus this guys are always complaining about not having room.
