Replacing Head Gasket

I have a leak in my head gasket.. Im a big noob. Ok my 96 GS-T has a 1g engine... (I believe its a 7 bolt for less chance of crank walk?) So the noob question I have is... What head gasket set do I buy? Do i buy it for a 1g or 2g? And does it matter if it says its for GSX if i buying it for 1g? site I was looking at only had 1gs for gsx. Last thing is.. should I get the stock head gasket or better to go aftermarket... I dont know all my mods but I know it has a 16g in it. Dont believe it has anything else done to the engine. thanks

Your engine is a 6 bolt not a 7 bolt (6 bolts are less likely to CW and are from early model 1g's). You need to get a standard bore composite gasket for a 90-99 4g63 Turbo. I would go with OEM.

How do you know it's leaking?

Well buy the one for your engine, also i would replace the timing components, and water pump since your there, I learned the hard way. Never replaced my pulleys, everything is new now!

not nessicarly a 6 bolt because there were 7 bolts in the 92.5 to 94 1st gen models. But like the last poster stated any standard oem bore headgasket will work. I would stick with the composite unless the block and head are getting resurfaced in which case you could go with mitsu mls or cometic. You should put some arp head bolts on while the head is off incase you ever decide to run 20+ lbs of boost.

I'm assuming, which is not always smart around here, that the previous owner swapped a 6 bolt in his 2g, why they would swap a 2g 7 bolt for a 1g 7 bolt is beyond me

Um, maybe because most people swap in any other engine other than the 2g 7-bolt because they become terrified by the thought of crankwalk. I would be more scared of the chupacabra than crankwalk.

Back to something more informative:
If your not going to get the head resurfaced get a composite gasket. And like stated above, do yourself a favor and redo your timing components, and get some ARP's.

Thanks for all your feedback.. but I think I made a big mistake in this post... its not the head gasket... its the valve cover gasket that is leaking... but yea.. it was silly question.. of course i need 1g with the 1g swapped in there. But now this isn't my biggest problem anymore starting today.. my car seems like its misfiring or something. Most of the time when I give it gas it starts some sort of sputter and has none of its power.. it will accelerate.. but very slowly. sometimes the car shakes a little but usually not much. I changed the spark plugs and air filter but still no bueno. Tommorow I'm probably going to change the fuel filter... any suggestions?

What are your plugs gapped at? Mine did the same thing when I first got it, so I replaced them and gapped them at .35, and the sputtering went away

sounds like spark if it's sputtering, maybe a loose plug wire?

My money is on a boost leak. How bad is the valve cover gasket leaking?

Fuel filter was the issue for anyone maybe having a similar problem.
