This issue is one of the weirdest issues I've had with my DSM so far. I've searched the forums for a while and couldn't find a similar post to what I have going on. My issue is that when I step on the brake pedal, my wipers turn on and stay on for a couple seconds after I release the brake pedal. When this happens the wipers turn on at the low speed setting. I figured that it was a ground issue when this issue first started happening. Figuring that the bad ground in the brake light system was somehow sending power back threw wiper system to find a better ground source. So I went threw and cleaned all the grounding points but that didn't fix my issue. The issue doesn't happen all the time, mainly happens during and a few days after a rainy day. After a few days everything works normally.

LlllThis issue is somewhat mind boggling to me because the brake and wiper electrical systems should be completely separate, at least that's what I would think. I was talking with a family friend (who is a master tech) the other day about this and he said it could be in the engine bay fuse/relay box. Saying that if the fuses or relays for both systems where close to each other that the moisture from the rain could cause the power to jump from one system to the other. I don't think that's the case after looking at the layout diagram on the fuse box cover. I'm just wondering if any of you guys or girls out there have had the same or similar issue, or have any insight of what may be the cause. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Currently I have my wiper switch unplugged because of it and just plug it back in when I need to use my wipers, which is fairly annoying to do as your driving down the road. Could the wiper switch itself be the cause? One other thing is that the car did have an alarm/keyless entry installed and removed before I bought the car. All the wiring and connectors are still there just the brain was removed. The install is kind of hacked up but there is no reason to tap into the wiper system for an alarm to be installed. I've had the car on the road for over a year now and this issue started about 2 months ago during a rainy day. Everything was fine up till then. Thanks for reading, any ideas or advice will be greatly appreciate.

The brake and wiper systems are separate. I would start by disconnecting battery, unbolting engine fusebox, and looking at the mass of wires underneath for possible shorts, cuts, bare wires, etc. Of course never rule out a hacked up alarm system wiring job.

Ive seen cars on multiple occasions where while its running the brake pedal activates the starter solinoid. Wires rub against each other and make contact on older cars. If you can look up the wiring harnesses or find what color wires are for the two and run down the lines youll find something.

I have to wonder if somebody is playing a prank on you. Reminds me of the old "horn when you hit the brakes" prank we did back in the day.

I'm with the idea of a hacked alarm system job too. Remote starters have an anti-theft feature where if the brake pedal is depressed without the key in the ignition after remote starting it the car will kill. Might be related.

Mr. Shakeandbake hit the nail. Usually that's what happens with issues like yours, I see it on regular basis. Look at the wiring diagrams and trace the wires and you'll find out the problem. Good luck!

Thank you guys for all your thoughts, all is greatly appreciated. I like the idea of the prank, but none of my friends are smart enough with cars to pull something like that off. It is a good idea tho for the next time I want to prank one of my friends LOL. I'm with you guys with fuse box mess. Only thing is in the engine compartment box there is only a fuse for the brakes (Stop Lamp, 15A Fuse) and nothing for the wipers, at least nothing that is clearly marked for the wipers. I figured there would be a relay in there for the wipers at least but according to the diagram on the cover there's nothing. There is a 20 amp fuse in the interior fuse box, but there is no brake lamp fuse in the interior. So both systems don't seem like they are close together at all. Unless they are bundled together in the harness as it goes threw the fire wall. Which doesn't sound very fun if that's the case. I am very suspicious of the alarm install, but there should be no reason at all for the alarm to be tapped into the wiper system. But then again, it could have been installed by some hack job wannabe mechanic who shouldn't even be working on cars in the first place. The install definitely looks like that may be the case :nono:. As I stated in my original post it only really happens during days with heavy rain and for a few days after the rain till it drys out it seems. When its dry everything works perfectly. This makes me think that it would be something in the engine compartment fuse box or wiring harness. The inside of the car stays dry, so I'm iffy that the interior fuse box is the culprit. This issue just boggles me, I just can't wrap my mind around how the two separate systems affect each other. It only turns on speed one, never on the intermediate/ delayed setting or speed 2 setting. Any thoughts on it being the wiper switch itself? What about thoughts on a ground issue ? Where the brake lamp system has a bad/weak ground causing the power to flow backwards looking for a better ground (which just so happens to be the wiper system) which ends up powering up the wipers to setting speed 1.

Also does anyone know where I may find wire diagrams for my '97 GS-T?

Thanks again everybody, if I can find some spare time this weekend I plan on following up on your guy's ideas. I will post my findings as soon as I find out the cause.

I wanted to update this for anyone who may run into this issue. My solution to OP's exact issue was very simple, albeit embarrassing. I had recently switched over to 2gb headlights along with the bumper swap. For whatever reason, the new lights did not come with signal bulbs included in the housings but I assumed they were there because the 2ga replacements I had gotten previously did. So, check your signal bulbs inside the headlights for bad bulbs/connections/shorts.

952g63t, So because you didn't have the bulbs installed it caused this issue? Or did the connections some how bend and bridge(for lack of a better term) themselves? I'll be sure to check that out because i do have a set of OEM style aftermarket headlights. My problem comes and goes with moisture. If its similar to yours I may be able to get away with re-greasing them with some dielectric grease, worse comes to worse maybe seal them up with some RTV. This could possibly be the cause because I do not have the inner fender liners so the water could be tossed up by the front tires right at the signal bulb plugs. Thank you 952g63t, I will be sure to look into this possible cause.

Also thank you everyone else for your ideas, I will be sure to look into all of them and see what i can find out. I'm sorry it took me so long to get back on here to reply to you guys, I've been so busy with work that I haven't even had time to chase this issue any further yet. It used to have an aftermarket alarm installed but someone pulled the brain before I got the car. I removed all the wiring for the brain with exception to the door lock trigger wires. As of now I've just pulled the plastics around my steering column and unplug my wiper switch when this issue occurs instead of actually fixing the issue. Granted I haven't been driving the car because my license is currently suspended, the car just gets to much unwanted attention from the cops to drive with my license suspended, so I've been borrowing my dad's more inconspicuous Trailblazer. Thanks again everyone, I will be sure to let you guys know what I find out when I get the chance
