will not idle

I just purchased a 1992 laser N/T from my job. The car runs good but will not idle unless you feather the throttle. If I rev the car alil for about 3-5 mins lightly and gently take my foot off the gas it will stay idle for about 1-4 mins then die off. The car smokes alil and smells rich, also can hear a miss in idle. I was going to change the ISC and see what happens then while idle i was messing with the biss screw and got it to idle with no issues but when i turn the car off and turn it back on i had the issue again with it not wanting to idle until i rev it up and gently my foot off the gas. So any advice?

Adjust the throttle cable...are you kidding? Your car should idle without any pressure on the gas pedal, so the answer is not tightening the throttle cable.

If your car is running rich, then that gives you some indication of what can be going on. If your revving it and it is idling that's because it's not being allowed to load up.

First of all, do you have any check engine lights? Are any mods done to the car? The rich condition could be a multitude of things, from the O2, to the MAF, to timing. If you just purchased the car it'd be best to address the simple things first, and do basic maintenance.

I don't know about smoking and being rich, but once my alternator was weak and couldn't keep the battary charged at idle for too long and I would have to keep the rpms at 1500k at idle. Your local autozone, advanced, pep boys, ect. does free charge system tests.
