will a smaller exhaust tip be quieter?

Has anyone ever cutoff an oversized 5" tip and replaced it with a normal sized tip - say 2.5" or 3"? If so, does it quiet down the exhaust note?

From my experience, it seems that the size of the tip changes the tone, but not volume. A larger tip makes a deeper sound, while a smaller one seems to be more raspy and "ricer-sounding". So i say, unless ur afraid of people thinking that you have a ridiculously large tip, the bigger, the better.:)

IMO if you want to tone it down a bit. Get a smaller muffler. A muffler that is 3 in straight thru is gonna be alot louder than one that is 2.5 straight thru.

Well I cut the 5" tip off the 2.5" Borla catback I have (I also have a Buschur 2.5" DP and hi flow cat). I put on a Borla 2.5" x 2.75" tip. The sound decrease is night/day. The exhaust is only a little louder than stock. A low rumble when accelerating. My intake is louder than the exhaust (just like stock). The tip is sleeper looking as well and will not attract unwanted attention (unless you like that sort of thing). Big tips definitely do work like megaphones and amplify and deepen the exhaust note.
