i have a 90 tsi. and im pretty sure its the cps thats out. i already replaced the power transistor and still no spark. i went to the junkyard today and picked up two cps but from a n/t and im wondering if they will still work? thanks for your input.

hey. i dont know if this helps but i would go to napa or schucks.com and pull up part numbers on both. if they match then they would... if they don't they probably won't... just my 2 cents

Cam Position Sensor? Yes. They work exactly the same. If you have a 1gb style just take the connector and re-wire it and it will work as well.

Plug one in with the key on and spin it. If you get spark, you'll know it's your old sensor. If you don't, look into your wiring and your coil packs. If you have a logger you can watch for a tach signal as well.

BTW, I think a more standard term for it is the Cam Angle Sensor. You'll get a lot more info looking for CAS.

well on the 90 its the cas and cps in one unit haha well atleast thats what the book and useless autozone says. the pulgs are still the same if thats what your talking about. still a 4 wire plug and will clip right in. its cold and midnight where im at and ima do this in the morning was just wondering if it was worth a shot. and ill give it a look tomorrow really hope thats it. i bought this car in jan and just got it registered and i lost spark so its been pretty crappy, but thanks for the info.

Yes, they are one and the same. If your old one is bad you'll need to set the base ignition timing again when you put the new one in.

Engine Timing

You're pretty damn lucky to find 2 90 style CASs in the junkyard. They are the odd duck of all DSM's. The TPS, CAS, throttle body, fuel rail, and some other things are different. All the other stuff swaps over, but some of it is harder to swap than others.

Post back if there is still no spark when you plug in and spin the new CAS, I'll have some more info for you.

yea i got pretty lucky found them from two haundiys or how ever you spell that haha and i also found a valve cover from one of them also that just has the doch 16valve on the bottom. paid 13 buck for the cover and maniged to um yea walk out with both the cas in the bag haha. and there was a few other cas that i could got but was in a hurry so just picked that up. but yea ill let you know how it goes. im hoping so bad thats all it is. i wanna drive it already haha.

and the yard i went to only had one 1g in it and that thing was pretty much done to the bone. got a door handle though so that was cool haha.

o and one more thing. if it does work does it matter how i put it in the slot for the cam?

ok so no luck yet. is there and obd port i can hook up a scaner to?

ok so i tested the cps for votls. in the book it says between 4.8 to 5 and im not getting anywhere near that. my dad thinks i might have a short somewhere. does anyone know if it would mayb be the ecu? i opened it and everything looks good. no odd smells nothing leaking or burnt lookin. im just lost and getting really deffeted by this damn car. makes me even wonder if its worth the 8 bills i paid for it.

The 90 harness:

pin 1 (Larger)Black Ground
pin 2 Red +12v Power
pin 3 White TDC (to ECU pin 22)
pin 4 Black Crank Angle (to ECU pin 21)

I'm not sure where you got 5V from.

Yes, it matters where you put the slot. Don't worry about that until you can get a spark.

Do you have enough $ or 5 finger skills to snag a hyundai ecu? If so, that will help diagnose a bad ECU. What you ultimately want is for some combination of CAS, ECU, and wiring to give you both spark and click the fuel injectors on, as well as turn the fuel pump on when you spin it.

If you have instant messenger mine is tkelly278. Might be faster that way.

There is an OBD port. It's near the fuse box. If you have a laptop, I can get you set up with a way to scan it.

what year ecu from the hyundai? and i got like a bill left to get this thing running. still gotta buy tires. and i dont have an im but ill toss you my number if thatd work better. and i got the 5 volt deal from my buddys shop of how to see if the cas is working. and i belive form the manule. i cant remember right now. and i could go to a yard tomorrow. going outta town for my buddys b-day. so i could swing by and grab one mayb. and my fuel pumps good getting fuel to the rail. havnt checked the plugs to see if theres fuel there yet. but ima do that when i wake up. and what should i test on the cas? i tested the red wire and im not getting any where near 12 volts with key on. im getting around like .04 or something like that. so im not sure what would cause that, we also jumped a hot wire to the red wire to give it 12 volts, still no spark but it makes my cel come on when i do that and you can hear a relay click thats by the break booster, so im not sure whats going on with it. but if you know it be great to fix this thing already ha. and i have a labtop. how would i make this work to check for codes?

After collaborating with a friend, we think it may be the MPFI fuse or the relay.

When you turn the key on check for ~10-12v at one of the injector plugs, and the FPR solenoid.

FPR solenoid.

I'm assuming you can find the injector plug yourself.

If you don't have voltage there, there could be several possible problems. The fuse
http://members.shaw.ca/dsm.1000q/Engineprimer/1G/relaybox.htm
MPI fuse, it's a 20A. I've blown one before.

the relay, also on that page, or, the ecu. Check the fuse, then the relay, then try any ecu from 1990-1994 that came from a DOHC engine. They don't all have the same sensors, but you will know your ecu is bad if the other two don't fix it.

Leaning toward the relay. You may want to try grounding it manually.

Also, does the CEL come on for a few seconds when you turn the key on? That will rule out the fuse and most likely the ecu.

ok thanks alot. im going to check those things out tomorrow. If its not raining. how would i reground the fuse though? i dont have the cover for the fuse deal thats on the batter post. didnt come with it on the car. so im not sure which fuse it is that i should check but gona guess its the 20amp. ive checked all of them before and was getting power through them. i pulled of the plastic cap and checked with a volt meter. but will check again tomorrow. and what relay am i looking for? im thinking i might have missed something on that. and the only time the cel comes on is when we jumped a hot wire from the batter to the red wire on the cas, and thats when we hear the cleaking from one of those 3 deals posted in the link. ill find out which one it is tomorrow and ill let you know. ill also test the injector. and if i am getting 10 to 12 then does that mean everythings ok with those or what?

ok so after almost a week of bad weather still no luck. not getting 12volts to the red wire on the cas. tested the mpi getting 12 to the mpi fuse. check the solenoides and only getting i think like .12 on the fpr and on the ecu plug like .21. i really think its the ecu. im gona look around to see if i can use one to test on my car. so if you or anyone has any ideas thatd be great.
