can a bent valve cause the ignition timing to be off and cause the car to be extremely slow. My car has good compression but may have a slightly bent valve. This is what happened the idle pulley locked up and spinned the bolt loose and popped off the car was barley running at about 500 rpms and the engine was shut off right before the pulley fell off to the ground and there was no sound of the valves hitting the pistons. we put the belt back on with a good pulley and we got it to run but it is so slow the timing belt is exactly right but the ignition timing is way off and the harmonic balancer is also correct.
here is the link to where some of us tried to find out why the ignition timing was way off but the tread was deserted. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=263563

Thanks Justin

if you have a bent valve what can happen is the air will acually blow over to another valve and blow out the ignition, if you have a min of 90 psi to each cylinder then it will fire. but a bent valve has nothing to do with timming timming though does make bent valves and if your idle pully fell off most likely your timming IS off. its just a bi*** to check. ill give you the diagram though.

it fires but the ignition timing is way off and i cant find out why. i have adjusted the ignition timing by grounding out the connector by the battery and using a timing light to as far as i can but it is still at around 20 degrees off of where the mark of TDC is. We put the belt back on while lining all the marks up. The timing belt is on exactly how it is said to do according the Haynes manual. I have just ran out of ideas to as why this would be happening.

Have u taken the head apart and seen how bent it actually is? Because it may be bent more than u think, and chances are, u bent more than one. If u got lucky and the cylinders only made one cycle, u probably bent at least 4.

no i have not but if they were bent would they be ticking? cause there is no ticking noise from the engine. but my main concern is would this cause the ignition timing to be off? I don't want to take the head off and find out they were fine when it could be something else i have not checked? Are they any other things that would make my ignition timing to be so far off that i can adjust back to where it is suppose to be?
