Wierd Question: Can you run the engine without any tranny fluid?

I'm in the process of changing the axles in my GSX. So far I have drained the tranny and transfer case and removed the passenger axle. I also have to have new balljoints pressed into the control arms (155k miles on the, cracked boots). I was hoping that while they were at the machine shop I could run some sea foam through the motor and change the oil, plugs and coolant.

My question is can the engine be run with the tranny as it is? The car is up on jacks. Without the clutch disengaged is there anything still turning inside the tranny? Flywheel?

Of course the flywheel would be spinning but it's between the engine and trans. The input shaft inside the trans would be spinning and that's why do don't want to do this without lube in the trans.

Ok, I thought there was still something that moved within the tranny. Sorry for the dumb question, I'm glad I asked though

WTF...What would make the shaft spin if the car isn't in gear?

the input shaft will spin when the engine is running always UNLESS the clutch is pressed so you could run the engine for the 5 mins. it takes seafoam to work IF you held the clutch down the WHOLE time.

Why the engine does of course. It's connected via the clutch/pressure plate/flywheel to the crankshaft. There are other parts that also spin normally when the trans is in neutral and the clutch isn't pushed in.

I started another thread in an attempt to diagnose a stange rattling coming from the transmission. Your reply here being somewhat related to my issue made me want to get your imput on whats going on.
