My friend just aquired a few things for his Evo8 and now its time to tune. Hes using just 720s and an AFC on there for the fuel. Its on the dyno at Alamo in Texas right now and the ecu wants to retard the timing. The problem is they can't turn the boost up any higher because the turbo header is glowing red hot. Egt. shows around 900 celsius. (1652f) What could be causing the ecu to flip out like this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
His a/f good about 11.3

How much boost are they trying to run and what octane?
The fuel pump fight might need to be upgraded.
Heat soaked intercooler?
I just got an Evo too, but I've not started any upgrades, so these are just guesses.

they started with 14psi then to 17psi. He got an upgraded perrin intercooler.

pump gas (93 octane). fairly large turbo.

My guesses would be the fuel pump and or the fpr. Is the fuel pressure normal. Can the stock evo fpr handle 720's.

The EGTs may very well be high due to the 720's which are probably dumping a piss load of gas and the extra fuel is being burned in the exhaust system. But we could all probably use some more info on his setup as these are all just assumptions.

Its a Greddy T-67 kit. Hes got 3in HKS/Perrin exhaust, no cat, 3in downpipe, and intake. And the upgraded Perrin FMIC core.

Fuel is not the issue. a/f is smooth, it's right where is supposed to be.

The timing is being retarded and we can't figure out why.

That is one big arrss turbo. LOL... He could be knocking pretty bad so what's his timing like and how about his logs? How are those looking?

thats the thing hes got no data logger or anything. They don't know where exactly the timing is at, but they do know that it is being retarded some how. And there pretty sure hes not knocking. Though knocking does sound like the case here.

Anyone running around on a setup like that should definitely consider some kind of logging capability. Personally, I would park the car ..... at the very least crank down the boost before the motor gets ruined and get yourself a logger ASAP.

I think its either high intake temps, knock or a combination of the two. Either way he should get a logger to get to the bottom of it. Good luck.

Its staying down there in Alamo until he makes at least 350-375 awhp. So any other suggestions would be great! :thumb:

you have already been given one, get a datalogger.....

this needs to be the first thing you try. no other suggestions needed at this point. you will most likely figure something more to build off of once you hook one up.

aren't 720's a bit big to tune with an AFC?? Let alone without some data logger?

i too am wondering this. and as for the datalogger.... would an evo tuner use a datalogger for a 1g (obd1) or 2g (obd2)?

Tyler

Sorry, but I can't just sit by and not say anything on this...why oh why did he bring his car to alamo :( Please don't tell me its because they have an awd dyno. I'm sorry but i've just not only heard of, but know of personally too many people who got screwed over by them. Maybe they have gotten better? If I was you, I would take the car up to Forced Performance in McKinney...you'll be happy you did.

It's obdii. I'm using the same logger from my 2g. The stock fuel tuning/map at WOT sucks nuts too.

If you're overheating, you probably blew a headgasket.

So let me get this straight, you bolt a T-67 onto an EVO8 looking for 350whp? Are you stupid? Then you proceed to tune his car with only an SAFC and no logger, not to mention a standalone? Take your parts off, send them back, and take the car to a shop. You are an idiot.

EDIT: If you do decide and continue attempting to tune it, keep this in mind. On 1 bar on my PT67, I was using 47% injector duty cycle of my 1680's, which comes out to be around 800cc's. If you're only on 780's, and you're tuned richer (11.3 versus 12.0a/f on mine), then your injectors are being pushed.

There's a recall on all Lancer and Outlander for defective engine fan relay. I'm pretty your engine fan never kicked on.

He said screw it and bought an autronics unit. He now runs just fine. :thumb:

And I spoke to him about Alamo. He said there were a lot of people that got screwed by them, but they got rid of some employees and I guess they are a lot better now.

Anyone who runs a T67 without a datalogger has no idea about cars, should not be tuning them, and should be shot. STOP WATCHING THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS!!!!

What does Fast and the Furious have to do with anything. Im not very fond of that movie anyways.

I'd say take it to Forced Perfomance. I think the question is why wouldn't you? :p
