I dont know if this is a basic question but I could not really find anything on it. Why dont you ever really here about our cars changing the gearing like all those mustangs do. And why is it that different gearing is really only good on autos? Thanks :dsm:

I will be totaly honest. I am not positive. I know John Shepard offers taller tranny gearing to deal with other needs. I am not sure if the final drive works the same in the rear end of a DSM, as a 9 or 8.8" ford rear.

Shep, TRE and others offer taller gears in the tranny itself, I would assume that if you wanted to make the rear diff taller then you would have to do the same to the other differentials, front and center.

Yea the reason we can't do that is because of our awd. only changing the rear gearing would destroy your center differential very shortly and for the amount of work to change both front and rear diff gearing its just easier to change the gearing in the transmission.

how about in a fwd, wouldnt it be the same? in my dads focus, we changed the gears at ford

they change then in V8 cars ### it helps alot with torque.... which helps it get off the line,
and if you are AWD, you dont really need help with that LOL

The main reasons we can't change gears is that we have trans-axles instead of a separate transmission and axle. Shep offers different gear ratios but those are for the individual gears themselves. While they can be changed to give you similar results, the gears changed in mustangs and such are the final drive gears. This would be the equivalent to our front diff and it's drive gear. The ones Shep changes are the individual gears themselves instead of the final drive, which would apply a correction/modification to all the gears since it's last in line after all of them.. I doubt that there's even different gear-sets made to change the final drive ratio for our cars but i could be wrong.

ON a FWD it would be easier if they were available, but you'd still have top pull the trans and take it apart instead of just swapping gears in the rear end like the stang/camaro guys can. An AWD would be a tad harder because of more parts to take off, but if you could change the final drive for the front, it should apply to the rear, unless you have to change the front and center diff gearing to achieve it.

Not to mention, from the factory our cars are sporting roughly 4.11:1 gearing in the area that would equate to the "rear end gears" on rear drive cars.. They are usually going from 2.73 or so to a 3.73 or 4.11.. So we already have the gears they want because our cars were designed around a low torque I4 instead of a high torque V8

I hope this clears it up a little... I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's just not very feasible because of the effort involved in doing it, and that's IF you can get the gears

In a rear wheel car like a mustang they came from the fact with like 3.23 final ratio. Our car came from the fact with like 3.94 final ratio. So we already have a low ( numerically high) ratio. I don't know about anyone else on here but I wouldn't want mine any lower. I run through first gear to fast as is.

You can change 1,3,4,5 you can run a taller or shorter in our cars but cost is a issue, not to mention if you are gonna do this you have to buy new parts as you cant find them used and if you are gonna do this then you should just build the trans.

how about the evos, this asian kids down the street can hit like 55 in first gear, mine only hits 37

that guy is full of sh*t LOL

Where to buy longer/shorter 1-5 gear sets and higher 5th gear and rebuild kits?

I had the sire but i lost it. I know its out there....

I want to know the site or any sites selling the longer/shorter 1,2,3,4,5 gears.

I have a 2g.
