I was just wondering who had their motors rebalanced after removing the balance shafts. Is it really necessary, because the BS dont change the balance of the rotating mass, right? What should I do? I would most likely not want to have the motor rebalanced if I could get away with it, because im on a tight budget. Who on here has had it rebalanced, or not rebalanced. Have you seen any problems with not rebalancing the motor?
-thanks

I haven't had mine re-balanced. I haven't noticed much vibration at all. I guess it depends on how well your motor is balanced to start off with.

will taking out the crank and the whole bottom end un-balance your motor since your taking it apart?

No. Only way you are going to affect the balance is by taking material off the rods, pistons, or crank. Or putting one of those cheap underdrive pulleys on. They can affect the balance too since they don't have any dampening.

The balance shafts have nothing to do with the balance of your crank, rods, and pistons. They are simply there to off set the weight of the crank. The only time you need to rebalance your crank is if you change something on the crank, change rods, or change pistons. That being said....You can completely disassemble the bottom end of the engine. As long as you don't change any parts (you can replace the rings as their weight will not change significantly) and put the rod/piston combos back in the same cylinder they can out of. Not to bash you but if you need to ask this question then I wouldn't recommend you take the motor apart without exsperienced help.

-not to be ### but i do have quite a bit of experience. I just needed one little thing cleared up because I dont want anything to happen that I could have prevented in the future. SO I take it, you didnt have your motor rebalanced after you took the BS out?

There is no need to. Like everyone else said, they have no effect on motor balance. Anti-vibration shafts would be a more appropriate name.

Yes. They are just there to counter torsional vibration. Since a 4 cylinder only has 4 cylinder to only fires every 90*. Therefore you feel each fire more. That's why they put balance shafts in there. To dampen it. On an 8 cylinder engine, there is a fire every 45* so it is a lot smoother and they don't need balance shafts. They are in no way tied in with the rotating assembly.

I rebuilt my engine and had the rotary balanced. to tell you the Truth, I forgot I had even removed the shafts until I was cleaning up the garage a week later and 700 mile on the car and found the things sitting in a box.

I'd say have it balanced if your getting machine work done for sure, if not, it may not be that big of a deal. I cant tell a difference; but I went the extra mile! (I added 2G over sized pistons)

Thats not true, we all have to start some were; and this is the perfect car to do just that. I would however recommend having access to a second vehicle. As some of us learn slower than others.:D

As long as you're ORGANIZED, have a Haynes and Chilton manual, tools, and access to dsmtuners you'll be OK.

This all assumes you played with Lego's as a kid;) .

-Use a digital cam and take lots of pics
-Use ice cube trays with masking taped labels on edge for each cube of screws; saran wrap when full.
-Jiffy peanut butter bottles are good for the big bolts. Tape like bolts together and label.
-Label every thing. If you think you can label it with 4 words, use 6!
-Plan your parts looking at other peoples builds and set aside extra cash to burn; at least 20%
-If your working out side it will be harder than you think.
-Tools are not cheep, plan for them. Ask and look into it. Haynes has a list in the front. You will need 75% of them.
-Be safe, dont get your self stuck under your car wile home alone. The thought has cross my mine more than once; thats when you slide back out and place the jack stands.

P.S. Eric, you should be able to fix your type-o at the title page before clicking into here. On the title page, in the title box, double click in the open area to the right and it should cursor up for you.

The balance shafts have NOTHING to do with the rotating assembly balance. No reason to get everything rebalanced. They are called balance shafts because they balance out the torsional vibration of the engine. Nothing to do with balancing it wieght wise.
