Hello, i know there are a million people who ask this question but,
what turbo would be best for my set up?
I have a 96 Talon Tsi Awd 5 speed
It has a 2.3 liter 6 bolt in it, walboro 255 pump, 660cc injectors, injen cold air intake, hard intercooler pipes, with the stock sidemount. 1g crushed BOV, full 3" exhaust, SAFC II, ACT clutch, and other little stuff.
Currently the car is on a rebuilt t25 running 15lbs of boost. It pulls way hard and is faster then a gst I drove that had a 16g and other stuff done to it.
I am wanting to go bigger, but I still want it to be reliable as it is my DD.

What do you guys suggest?
There is a guy local to me who has a new 16g with o2 housing and j pipe for $200.
I just want something that will get me in the solid 12's and around 350 hp.

Thanks, Ryan

the 16g is a perfect turbo for you. Easy bolt on and good for up to 400 hp. $200 is awfully cheap, make sure its not a chinabay turbo beforehand.

It might last 50,000 miles, it might last 50. How much boost do you plan on running? Maybe if you keep it around stock boost it might last, but it might not. Ebay turbos are hit or miss.

This is really true, you would essentially be rolling the dice by going with a knock off turbo.

I'd probably just run around 15-16 for now.
Would you guys give it a shot since it's $200? Or just save that money and get a real one?

Well since your getting a j pipe and o2 housing with it i would go for it. Does it come with oil feed/return lines too? If it does you are basically buying an install get (which usually runs for $100-175) along with the turbo. So if the turbo blows you can buy the real thing without having to buy an install kit.

Good point, and i'd pretty much just be buying the install kit with a temporary turbo until I can get more money for the real one.
I guess it sounds like a good deal, and maybe the turbo would last a while. And maybe I could find someone to buy my T25 that only has 3,000 miles on it for $100 or something.
Would I have to get the car retuned?

You have an safc, you can log it after the install and see if your pulling more fuel or anything. Retuning couldn't hurt, its probably not necessary though.

How do you log it? I don't know how to use this thing yet. I've been trying but i'm afraid to mess up the tune.

I would keep the T25 over a knock off 16g. Even if the turbo lasts, if you're running stock boost, it's just going to feel more sluggish then the T25 anyway. Just wait until you can afford a real MHI 16g or another reliable turbo in that range.

1,000 psi if you have supporting mods, LOL. I like to help out but do some searching. All of your tuning/turbo questions have been answered already.

How much boost can you run with a 16g?

That depends on a lot of things. Even knowing your mods, we can't tell you a definite answer. All you can do is get a logger and find out for yourself. What 16g it is also makes a difference.

Dude 2.3 stroker on a 16g? Good luck hitting 20psi. Why have a stroker motor with a lil turbo? Thats odd................... Reach for the stars so if U fall you land on a cloud. U have a stroker motor with absolutely no supporting mods it sounds. Maybe take it out and trade it to a sucker for a built 2.0. I mean shep, bill lowe, brent rau, buschur and everyone fast never used a stroker. Wonder why?

A 2.3 with a small turbo does kind of make no sense, but if low end torque and quick response are your top priorities then I see nothing wrong with it even if I wouldn't personally do it.

Well thats just the way I bought the car, and i'm only 17 and still in high school. So I have a limited budget. If i had unlimited money i'd be putting a way bigger turbo on and redoing the whole car.

You could always pick up a holset but then you'd need to get more stuff to get its potential out.

my friend has a ebay big 16g in his and he has had no problems at all running 20psi he is pushing 421hp at the wheels and he has been running it like this for 3 years now
