So from what I have gathered I can use DSM link or the AFC Neo or the SAFC II. My thing is that currently my engine has 450cc's in it but I have the auto eprom ecu for 390's. Instead of getting it socketed and putting in a new chip, will I be able to tune it just as well with either the neo or safc2? This way I would only have to buy that set up which is a lot cheaper than getting all the new stuff for the ecu, and then link on top of it.

haven't done a thing, engine isn't even in the car yet, still really new to the tuning aspect of things, what's keydiver?

Keydiver is a from a guy who writes out a chip for an eprom ecu which will tune your car to the best of its abilities. You talk to the guy and let him know your mods done and he writes the chip out. I believe there is 3 stages of this chip. If your newer to DSM i would suggest this method over dsmlink and SAFC. I hear that SAFC can be a real pain and dsmlink i would say is for the more advanced in DSM. DSMlink is basically self tuning and you are the computer.

ok, but with keydiver I will still need to pull out my current eprom and put that in it's place? Obviously I would socket it to make future chip swaps easier.

what are your power goals with this build? Also whatever tuning your doing make sure to grab a wbo2. Just to make sure you dont get too rich or too lean. Its more for safety , but it will also help with your tune, your overall power, and some mpgs if done correctly. But if your just looking to upgrade injectors a little bit and keep the boost under like 12-14 psi, id say afc neo or safc II should be sufficient with a wbo2. just make sure to look into a fuel pump and afpr in the near future. Or possibly rewiring your fuel pump to squueze the last of the stock fuel pumps abilities.

edit: And yes, you would socket and replace the eprom chip with keydiver.

Ok, yeah my long term goals are 450hp+ but at that point I am probably going to go with a stand alone, the keydiver would work but I really don't want to do anything to the ecu, I'm probably going to go with the safc2 for now since I can have 2 maps on it instead of just one on the neo (unless they changed that)

edit: do I need to have a translator with the safc2? I'm going to add a wb02 sensor as well.

maf translator is only needed when you plan on using a gm MAF. How you use a gm maf is up to you. Do some reading if your interested in the maft. The FAQS have a sick write up on it.

but do some reading up on tuning with a SAFC (also in the FAQS) . Its quite easy if you have a wbo2. id say if your hp goals are under 325 short term just go with a safc to get some experience tuning, and squeeze what you can out of the stock-ish setup.

and messing with the ecu isnt as bad as it seems. I cant justify spending money on a stand alone, when you can buy dsmlink for 1/3 of the price and still be able to tune to your hearts desire, and keep the stock ecu (sorta). socketing a ecu is something i learned in my 10th grade electronics class about 5 years back its not that bad.

Remember the stock 1g ecu has very high timing. When adding injectors to an safc it tricks the ecu and timing gets even higher. Now if you got ecmlink right off you could control the timing and run more boost. I made the mistake back in the day buying the maft and safc. I ended up selling my datalogger, maft and safc to get ecmlink. After all said it dont only cost be about $250 after selling my old parts. Its so worth saving for.

I would also recommend DSMLink as well. It is very versatile and will grow with your needs. Plus its hard to argue with full fuel, air, and timing control.

ok, I think I have decided. For my current short term tuning I'm going to order a keydiver and run a safc2 and wb02. This way I can get the timing issue taken care of from the keydiver (and a better base tune) and then fine tune with the safc. It will be cheaper for now, then I will upgrade to link when I want to upgrade more and will have the time in between to learn about tuning and more specifically link a little more.
