My FWD 5-spd turbo 1g clunks/bangs when shifting into gear (unless I finesse the clutch) which is especially noticeable in 1st gear. Which mount needs looking at first as causing this and how hard is it to swap in another one and is it something I can do by myself in my driveway? Car is free/cheap modded and is going to stay that way so am I better off getting a stock rubber mount or ?polyurethane?

I would be willing to bet that it's your front mount that's down under the turbo and possibly the rear one as well. If you want to check for yourself, you can put the car in gear on a level surface with the hood up and rock it back and forth by turning one of the front tires. You can watch the motor to see if it is rocking back and forth and probably see which mount has the slop in it. You may need an assistant to help make it easier.;)

As far as what to use rubber, or poly..... Some of the poly mounts are just inserts that go inside the rubber one, so if your rubber is shot you may need to get a new one anyway, so you might just go with an oem rubber one, but again this varies depending on manufacturer. Good luck! :thumb:

OP (or anyone else who knows the answer) which mounts did you end up getting?

My 1990 fwd turbo w/a 5 speed rocks like a baby cradle when I shift. I was searching RockAuto, but the rear mount looks different than the one in the car. The front mounts all look the same though.

Anybody have any insight?
