Which MAS is it?

So this may be a dumb question but,

I bought my 90 GSX recently. The previous owner said he "Upgraded to a newer MAS". Is there an easy way to tell the difference between the 1G and 2G MAS? I know it's not a GM MAF because I used to have a Malibu (3100 V6) and I remember what that MAF looked like.

Thanks in advance for the help, and sorry if this is a stupid question. :D

is the mas in a black oval like plastic box? better yet heres a pic of a 1g and 2g

first pic is a 1g should be hidden in a huge can

second is a 2g should be visable

remove the cone filter. I dontsee a maf at all in your picture. the stock 1g is inside the cone filter. like i said the 1g is hidden in acan(but you can was removed)

I'll pull the Filter and the big black thing of plastic behind it off this weekend. It's too cold to do now.

I wouldn't be surprised if it is stock. The kid I bought it from was a jack*ss. :notgood:

Oh well, I'll post a pick after I pull it apart if I'm still not sure.

Hmmm I trust your opinions guys. I'm gonna assume it's stock. At this point I'm thinking I might go 3" GM MAF. Seems like a LOT of people here do it and get good results from it.

I'm planning on getting DSMLink later in the year, after I get the top end rebuilt, get my new turbo in, and get my new FMIC running. I was going to just keep the 2G MAS if that's what it was.

Seems like the GM MAF would be more beneficial. Am I wrong?

yeah, it's stock, that housing for the MAS looks like a stock 1G, maybe the previous kid didn't know what a "MassAirflowSensor" is?? The 2G housing for MAS is more "oval" shape than circular and extends a bit long towards the turbo. Hope that helps. :thumb:

The 2G MAS is just less restrictive compare to a 1G, upgrading to it would provide some difference

The GM maft and translator is benefical because you mount it after the bov, so it provides more accurate airflow reading. Plus you could vent to atmosphere if you dont care about performance and allows you to run an aftermarket intake pipe. Getting a datalogger or SAFC for tune wouldn't be a bad deal if your tight on budget for tune. I would rather full tune my stock setup before upgrading the turbo, unless you're experienced and have deep pockets. Learn somethings about stock before you actually move up to newer better parts. Exhaust (ported 2g headers, ported EVO O2 housing, Down pipe, etc) would probably benefit you more for early upgrades than a bigger intercoolers. Where as bigger pipes without proper support creates "turbo lag". HAHA That's my .02.

Yes. The 2G works great, arguably more effective than the GM MAF, you just can't run it in blow through (very well). Also, you can probably pick up a 2G MAF for very little, or an Evo MAF for a bit more if you're interested in outflowing the 2G. You could save a lot of money by just recirculating your BOV.

This is a good point. Do you know where I could find one? (Like a store of somekind) Or am I only going to find one on eBay?

Do not buy a maf from a store. Find a good used one usally 50 bucks with pig tail. At a parts store your looking at 100+ bucks

correction 220 new at parts store and no pig tail

Ohh yeah if yuor wondering what I mean by pig tail. A pig tail is the connector for the 2g mas with a few inches of wire. You have to wire it in to make it work right in a 1g

2G MAF in a 1G TEL/GVR4

Thanks for all the info guys. Just sent a PM to the guy selling those 2g MAS. I think that is the direction I am going to go in. :hellyeah:

Keep your power goals in mind for what you want to do with your MAS. If you're going to try and make over 400hp, you may want to look into a GM sensor. If you're content to stay under that mark, a 2G MAS is more than adequate.

Cost is another thing to consider. GM sensors can be found for fairly cheap, either on ebay, dsmtuners, or a junkyard. You'll now need a new intake tube for the turbo unless you want to run unneeded restriction through the old MAS. You'll also need to modify the upper intercooler piping or buy the ones DejonTool makes. And of course something that will allow you to use it such as a MAFT Translator or DSMLink (which you said you will likely get, so notch this one off).

I don't think I am going for more than low to mid 300's. Atleast for the time being :sneaky:

The 2G MAF has been proven good to 500 WHP. The Evo to over 600 WHP (when the honeycomb is properly secured). Either would be cheaper than the MAFT and generally perform better. Above that, you're best off going with SD anyway (which may STILL end up being cheaper than an MAFT setup). The MAFT is a relic of the past when SD wasn't commonly available.
