I bought a rebuilt 6 bolt short block and i pulled the pan to make sure everything was ok. It was supposed to have arp main studs, but has stk bolts. No biggie, they will hold up to the power im planning on making(350-400awhp). I pulled a main cap to check the brgs and crank. Now i need to r-torque the mains. I've searched and searched and can't find any specs. I bought a haynes manual and it says tq to 18ft/lbs and then turn another 90 deg. Are these tq-to-yeild bolts??? If so, then i need to replace them since i broke them loose??? Autozone checked in their computer and it says to tq to 47-51 ft/lbs! Now i'm confused. Does anyone know of the proper specs???

i know this doesnt help you, and might add to your confusion.

when i was doing rings and barings on a 95 mighty max and when i was putting the main i was tqing them down in INCH LBS! and that night i broke a bolt.... make sure your working with a really good tq wrench and make sure its inch lbs or foot lbs. just a heads up. oh there is a technique to tightening them. the hynes man. tells you it. one michanic told me to reset the tq wrench for each bolt every time you go threw the bolts. i dont think this is nessesary...

oh yea ied go with the hynes specs :rocks:

Please disregard this post because not only cant he spell, he doesnt know what he is talking about. As far as your torque settings, Both that you got are right. The proper way is 18 ft/lbs(not inch/lbs) and 1 full 90* turn afterwards. Acoording to some, the final torque value will end up somewhere around 50ft/lbs. Make sure you use some 30wt oil to lube the threads and under the bolt head before you retorque.

Are you confusing "main studs" and head studs?
If you do have ARP parts, you'd do best to follow ARP tightening specifications.

Nosir, look at what you quoted. I bought a SHORT BLOCK. I pulled the OIL PAN. It was supposed to have ARP MAIN STUDS, but i found the STK BOLTS(as in main bolts).
They are tq'd to over 60ft/lbs so i'm gonna loosen them and follow the Haynes procedure of 18ft/lbs and 90degs.
I do have a set of arp HEAD studs to install when i install the HEAD. I'll follow their procedure.
Thanks for ya'lls help. I really appreciate you taking time out to help! :thumb:
