Which LSD is best?

I have the Kaaz LSD in my car and I like it very much. It's aggressive when you first install it meaning you hear and feel it click on turns. After putting on some mileage you don't notice it anymore except when you make a real slow turn or a sharp turn from a dead stop. Most people will recommend the quaife for DD and Kaaz for track. The kaaz has a break in procedure while the quaife does not. I'm not sure of the other brands out there, but these are the two most popular for our cars

This is for a 97 GST... low 300 hp goal as a DD.

Qaufe .... $1195
Kar King (KTP) .... $795

OBX .... ? Even still making them?

Any other Helicals?

Oppinions? Preferances? First hand Knowledge?

I'd took the quafe LSD, it the greatest thing i have ever bought, improved my times all around in the 1/4. I could launch with bolt on GSX with the stock t-25 and pull on them with my 96 GST. stop spinning the tires while in second 2. Another reason i picked the Qaufe LSD is because its lifetime warrenty, works off Gears unlike Kaaz LSD witch works off Clutches and Fuilds, witch could one day take a crap on you. Only thing i don't like about Kar King Diff is that its only one year warrenty, i dunno how many people have broke them, but its always best to know you have a lifetime warrenty on something.

Thanks for the inputs everyone...

I am mainly looking at helical setups as for me it will be a DD. I do realize the Kaaz has wonderful benefits as 92DSMEdrick pointed out.

Any others comments, suggestions, oppinions?

What about the obx unit? It seems so much cheaper then the rest is it really that inferior to the KAzaa and the quaife units to warrent spending about twice as much

It really depends on your goals, it appears you looking to install a LSD & not know its there, until its needed. More then likely the Quaife is what your looking for, this is what I have & it works great. As far as your other options, Im not sure if KarKing still makes them for our application 9remember talk of them no longer producing them as they didn't have the sales to keep production of them). As for the OBX, the last I heard they were a complete POS. They were machined/manufactured (ie copied) incorrectly & even with work, there was still no way they would fit our cars.

YEah last thing I read was that the driver axle doesn't lock in. I don't even know if a LSD unit woul dbe worth it in my situation. I'm looking for around 225whp without geting to crazy maybe a basic bolt on turbo kit or a wet kit and all the bolt on under the sun.

Guess in your situation, the best route would be to get your "go" mods first & then see if traction is an issue for you. If traction becomes an issue, then a LSD would be a good route to go :thumb:

Yeah I been lazy but when I get home i'm busting out the fmic from under the bed and putting it on forcing me to stick with the turbo 420a route so I can stop flip floppin between boost and spray. I'm like john kerry when it comes to modding.

I bought the KarKing ATB Diff and ran it for a few months in my old 1g before I parted it out.

I bought the Karking unit rather than the Quaife b/c of price. Overall the Karking unit was just as beefy and a bit beefier in spots than the Quaife, and was $450 cheaper. The only upside I saw of the Quaife unit vs the karking is that the Quaife carries a lifetime warranty, whereas the Karking only carries a 1yr warranty. However, I don't think either have had very many failures due to being built so well.

Overall I loved it. It hooked and left posi everywhere it went. I even cut a few 1.7 60' times in a fwd with it.

It was a toss up for me with the Karking unit and the Kaaz unit as both were closely priced. In the end I chose the ATB style diff b/c it would do everything I wanted it do, and also not need specific trans fluid, breakin periods, or clutch pack replacements every now and then.

1.7 fwd??? Was this with slicks and a traction bar or something that sounds pretty fast especialy since they used to bust your balls about having slow times

It comes with the speedo gear built in to the diff itself so you don't have to buy the gear separate.

Heres some pics of my old Karking unit.

Hey Dan, I was going to originally post a link to your thread, but decided against it. Guess now is a good a time as any. Click here. Stop posting up a thousand photos. ;)

Thanks for the info on the KarKing peice... that was what I was really fishing for. As for the OBX it seems like it was never implemented correctly and they pulled the product... atleast it seems.

Nice pictures of the Karking, which from what I remember, looks like my Quaiffe. The real weak link in the diff. are the spider gears. This, in its self, is good reason to put in a stronger LSD.
