I think I want a new Blow off valve....My current one is an HKS Super Sequential. I have now had 2 of these, the first one got hit by my hood, but they both gave me significant compressor surge. For a long time I thought it was just how it was supposed to sound, but I know it is compressor surge now.

Anyways, I have greddy pipes right now, and I dont want to weld a new flange on. HKS worked on it, but you have to rig it up. I had a Type S before, and didn't really care for it, plus I have a much larger turbo now (50 trim) and want to run 20+ psi. Should I get the Type R, or the new Type RS? How do they both sound? Not too big of a deal, but I dont want anything annoying. Biggest thing is for it to relieve the compressor surge, and not leak under 20-25psi.

Thanks.

Neither. Stay with your HKS SSQV. I have had two RS's that have turned out to be deffective. IMO the RS is crap. Again just my opinion, I have heard people have better luck then me with this BOV.

When you say that your HKS is compressor surging, is it the older style with the adjustment knob on the back or is it the newer one without the adjustment knob?

I currently have the HKS SSQV and couldn't be happier with it.

It has the knob, and its backed all the way out, and I still get compressor surge. Both HKS's did this.

Not trying to sound like a know it all, but your first order of business should be to get that BOV re-circulated. Then, after that decide on if you want to get a newer style SSQV. From my understanding (even on my car now, which is re-circulated) the SSQV does have a fluttering sound to it when it does release pressure. So, make sure that it is indeed compressor surge and not just the sound of the HKS when it "blows off".

The fluttering sound is coming from the intake filter, It is definitely compressor surge. The car has not been recirculated for 7 years, and it runs fine as is.

Well, even though this has been covered so many times before, I will repeat it again. Even though you think the car is running fine "as is" does not mean that it is running fine. Unless you have GM-MAF setup, which in your profile it says you don't, then you should not be running vented. period.

And when you say that the sound is soming from the intake filter, how do you know it is coming from there when driving the car? Are you free reving the car in neutral and purposely making the BOV "blow off" while you are under the hood or what?
And even if it is coming from the filter does not automatically mean it is compressor surge.

RECIRCULATE YOUR BOV. Stick with your SSQV. Unless its a greddy type-r.

HKS SSQV generally have a fluttering sound, there is a huge debate, thread on it.

do a search for "hks" its about 4+ pages.

I think the type S has way better performance the the rs alot of people have leaks from them. If the ssqv hit your hood good luck closing the hood with the type r its huge. If you send me an ssqv with flange I'll send you a type s if you decide you want that. I recommend looking at how big the type r is

Well the other reason I believe the BOV is giving me compressor surge is because my 50 trim that only has about 3000 miles on it already has some shaft play.

And the reason I know it is coming out of the intake is because I am under the hood pressing the the throttle.

The Intercooler pipes are different now than when the hood hit the HKS, they are lower, I dont think there should be any clearance issues....So then is the Type R a good pick?

First off, if the shaft play side to side or in and out? And still even if your intercooler pipes are "lower" still means that you are going to hit the hood with the type R. The thing is friggin HUGE. Like everyone else has suggested, first things first, re-circulate your BOV.

The type R sounds amazing on my boys rx-8, buy as said before this bov is huge. I'd say double the size of ssqv. Its tall as hell. If you really want to change bov why not just get a tial ?

I always thought that you couldnt vent to atmosphere without a blow throw setup or the car will run pig rich and idel like crap? I dont see this set up in your profile. Are you tuning with anything? If not recirculate it and the car will run better and you can tune better.

I was thinking this too.

I ran a bit rich without mine recirculated and I have had it shut off between shifts before. It makes it run a rich and you will most likely lose power, but its do able.

if he's been venting for 7 years I doubt he's gonna recirculate it now...

as said before, get a tial.

I can't say anything about the GReddy RS as I've never owned one. I do however have an authentic GReddy Type-S. It has worked flawlessly for me since I put it on my car 6 months ago. Along with the stock 1g BOV, the GReddy Type-S might be the most popular BOV among DSMers. There is definitely a reason for that...

Good things about the Type-S:
-decent price (for an aftermarket BOV)
-easy to recirculate (the Type-S needs no adapter to recirculate... the HKS SSQV and GReddy RS do)
-known to hold boost up to 28-30psi without leaking

Bad things about the Type-S:
-there are tons of knock-offs out there and not all of them work as well as the real thing
-the adjustment screw is easily stripped (see photo) if you're not careful

First off, if the shaft play side to side or in and out?

Side to side, up and down, none in and out.....Just wondering, but does that mean anything specific? I know my 16g was up and down, and in and out before it died.

A little side to side play is completely normal. Even on brand new turbos. So as long as its not a MASSIVE amount of play I wouldn't worry about it too much. But keep an eye on it. And if you get a tial, you still will have to get a blow through setup because you cannot recirculate the tials. IMO get the new style HKS SSQV

I went ahead and bought the recirculating kit, for 12 dollars, whats to lose. It might help a very little bit with the surge too, since it will be blowing air towards the turbine. Maybe.

You will not be able to run Greddy Type R bov if you are running some kind of stock like upper ic pipe routing. Don't even try you wont be able to close your hood. You need short route piping or mount it different.

The Greddy type-s was good to me when I was running stock turbo and mild mods. Some reason after I got a big turbo, and some other goods, it wasnt "performing" as well. It would blow off prematurely, even before I totally let off the throttle, even with different screw adjustments, it just didn't seem as responsive. I dont know many people who keep the type S to run boost more than 25lbs, hell even 21-22. But thats just MY observations.
