Hey everyone, I have a chance at getting either a TiAL Sport QR BOV or an HKS SSQV4 for around $50, both will be brand new. However, I have heard things about how you have to tune your car around the HKS. As for the TiAL, well...I haven't heard much negative at all. LOL

The main point for the car this will be going on is power. I want it to sound cool too though. That is the only reason I considered the HKS.

Thanks!

If you're in a draw through MAF setup you'll want whichever one recirculates. : )

Neither one will make more power than the other. You may have a problem with the SSQV being too small to flow enough air if you are making a whole lot of power though. I'm taking a wild guess, but you don't see single SSQV setups above 6-700hp. It's either a 50mm, or a pair of other style valves. Could just be for showing off, or it could be for a reason.

I love my tial style 50mm valve. I like all the O-rings for sealing, the size, the V-band atatchment, and the sound is totally rad. I'm on speed density so it is vented to the atmosphere.

I want to get a SSQV for my van, the RFL that is on it is not cool at all. Even vented it doesn't sound good at all.

I run a HKS recirculated, this is just my experience. The reason I choose this BOV was because my flange was designed for a 1g BOV, but the outlet of the recirculation faced the wrong direction. I got a 1g to HKS adapter and used the HKS BOV. Since it has a snap ring design it can be placed in any direction to recirculate. Made my life easier, when configuring my engine bay. You shouldn't have this problem with the TiAL since it has a V-band design.

Since I recirculated, I needed to get a recirculation fitting. To install the fitting, make sure you have metric allen keys, SAE will not fit properly, and you might strip the heads of the bolts. Its a PITA if you have standard allen keys.

Its a great BOV, I really dont care about the sounds, I mean its unique if anything, it just does the job for me. It does flutter at low boost.

I have read somewhere you CAN lose power when using an HKS SSQV. This is why I would only consider it to be one of the cooler parts of the car (well, cooler sounding anyways). I was reading this is a SSQV to Snapsys comparison however. That may be the reason..

Also, I plan to have SD for the vehicle. No more MAFs for me. LOL

The only thing to worry about as mentioned is that with a MAF metered ECU any open atmosphere BOV will draw in unmetered air, or loose unmetered air depending on the turbo size used (this is at idle and cruise) costing you power and fuel economy.

With speed density there's no worry about things like this. another thing you could do to run an atmospheric BOV with MAF is get the GM MAF meter and put it BEFORE the meter (like you see some GM MAF's in the UICP - just put the BOV between that and the turbo, that was all air is metered)

the only other thins is on LARGE turbos, the HKS isn't going to vent enough air to properly keep the turbo from loosing too much RPMbetween shifts, where the tial can move a LOT of air and will help keep bigger turbos happier

For $50, I'd be worried you'd be getting ebay, chinese, knockoff crap. I had a knockoff HKS SSQV.. not even close to the quality of the real thing.

+100000000000 for that price on both BOV's they may look real and it's hard to tell on some of them but you take em apart and the diaphram on the tial knock offs suck and the HKS's are just hit or miss on clone quality..personaly i try and avoid anything china becuyse they don't care who they take money from when ripping off copyrighted/patented materials/designs, they aught to be nuked for such behaviour

Agreed on the price being too cheap for quality. However, I had an HKS SSQV, and it does not flow enough air. With my current setup (seeing 50lbs a min) the HKS would stay open between shifts, for roughly 3-5 seconds letting the air out, not suppose to take that long LOL. Since then, I switched to a Tial 50mm, and man what a difference. I also prefer the Tial sound personally.

Sound or function...each does one of these well (though I like the Tial sound, personally). You decide. There's plenty of information on these two, and nearly every BOV on the market, contained on this site.

Why play around? Just buy a Tial. They never leak and can vent A LOT of air.

The HKS has a pull type valve that completely relies on vacuum to open. Unlike a greddy style where it uses vacuum and boost pressure to aid in opening.

So naturally while in vacuum it will stay open longer.

I know that, but it still should not be open for that long to let all the air escape. Hence why it does not flow as much.

I agree with this 100%. I've been reading about how ebay is being flooded with counterfeit's. Is the one your looking at coming from Asia or Malaysia?

I have been through three hks ssqv blowoff valves, and i can say they are cool sounding pieces of junk. I have purchased one tial and had zero problems with it, all three hks gave me headaches with the fluttering problems i had and that snap ring is a pain in the ass, ill take a vband over a snap ring any day, my vote is tial for practicality and it sounds very agressive as well.

Not to seem like a jerk, but thank you all for assuming I am buying one off of Ebay; I'm not. The REASON for such a good price is because I am trading an intercooler setup for $200 off my next purchase at a certain dealer. (The person I am trading it to works for them).

So $250 - $200 = $50.

Anyways, I could see how it is important to post the information you all did, for other people's future reference. But otherwise; I know about the whole knock-off situation. If you look through my previous threads, I bought a fake SSQV which broke on me when I took it apart. - I have learned!

Thank you all for the replies! I will be going with the TiAL...that is, if I do not decide to use the $200 worth to help pay for engine gaskets. Hmm, I am not sure which to do.

You can get an upper gasket set for $55 at advance auto if you use their coupon code. It changes every month.

I work for a local NAPA Stardard Parts store. So I would get a discount if I wanted Felpro and/or aftermarket gaskets and such. My plan is to go for all OEM Mitsu. gaskets.

Not to revive this from the dead; but as a possible Christmas present I am going to write down the VRSF 2g intercooler w/piping kit. I NEED to know the BOV flange.

So here are the BOVs I am considering TiAL, Forged or HKS. The HKS sounds cool, but their prices are always high (even used). TiAL is just great period. Price might be high though. Forged; price is low, and from what I understand they do a good job.

Tial. End of discussion.

I have an HKS SSQBOVWTFPOS. I took it off today and put my stock 1g BOV on.
