Where do you guys have your Adjustable Cam Gears set with 272 cams

Just as stated above, where do you guys have your adjustable cam gears set with 272 cams.... I ordered the FP2 cams and fidanza cam gears and was going to set the exhasut 5deg advance, does that sound right.... well let me know what combos you guys use....

I got a 91 TSI with a T3/TO4E 60 trim.
 
Well after some more reading I think it will be better to advance both gears to bring back some low end power..... now how do I actually degree the cams to zero than adjust from there... I want to go about 4deg advance on both gears.
 
Well I have a to4e 60 trim on the car and comp 101200's/fp2's and fidanza gears in my garage. If this thread is around in a few weeks I may have finally tricked my boy into helping me install them and will have something to say on the subject.

ohhh man, I cant wait for someone that knows about this post their deg. setup. I have the HKS 272/272 with fidanza camgears. but I 've never deg. them. A friend of mine dynoed 321 with some cams without deg. and 352hp just by deg. his camgears. So deg. the camgears makes a BIG difference.
 
Degreeing came gears are not just from other peoples settings! its part of building an engine to blue print! You need to get a dial indicator set it up on the top of the valve and read the cam card and see how it matches with the readings between the indicator and the specs on the card and adjust accordingly. Do it right the first time! and then you have a base line to advance and retard from as you want.
 
How do I degree from those specs..... and if I post up my exact specs fomr my cams can someone help me?
 
No offence but cam degreeing is not for the amature mechanic, you have to have alot of things to degree cams, degree wheel, piston stop, solid lifters, ect ect ect. Takes alot of time and effort. Just put the cam gears upto 0, they will be fine there, HKS 272/272 cams are pretty close to being degreed anyway, unless you have a decked block and shaved head.

But I would just leave the cam gears at 0, they will work just fine there.

Just out of curiousity .. where are yours set at? My mods are pretty identical to yours so I just want an idea.

You don't get it. What you need to do is *degree* your cams, or by making multiple dyno pulls and moving the gears in 1 degree increments to find the best powerband for your *specific* application.

It's like asking me how many ft/lbs my shoelaces are tied to to be comfortable, since you have the same kind of shoes. Every one will be different depending on if the block has been decked, the head surfaced, the cams ground slightly off-center, etc etc etc.

Degree your cams, or go to the dyno. Those are your only two options for setting up cam gears properly. :thumb:

Every car is different man, how much the head has been shaved, how much the block has been decked ect ect ect. SO my settings would not work on your setup, just take it to someone that knows how to degree cams on a DOHC, then go from there. But like I said, hks 272/272's are pretty damn close anyway, so just leave them at 0.

You need to adjust them at your own risk, too far and you will smash valves, or induce way too much knock. Trust me, you do not want to advance both cam gears, that will induce so much knock you won't know what to do with yourself.

And the best way to tune cam gears as stated above is on a dyno in real time. You just can't adjust them and go out by the seat of your pants, just does not work that way.

Trust me, you will be disapointed messing with the cam gears all day long for a measly 5-10whp, basically when you adjust the cam gears your are just moving the power band around.

Do some research on cam degreeing basics, do a google search for cam basics. You are not ready to degree them on your own, other wise you would not be asking what you need to do to get it done.
 
Well I think I fulley understand what I am doing now, I asked the question actually to clarify. I did have a problem at first trying to figure what way was advance and what way was retard on the gears I have but after I got all that sorted out and did some research on all of it I set the cams at 0 and than moved the exhaust cam to about -4 and it seems to have moved my power band exactally where I want it. Bringing on the turbo a little faster than before and it feels good.

I think that if you want to set your cams gears you should degree your cams in. Otherwise it is just a shot in the dark as to where they will end up. There are just too many variables for someone to arbitrarily say +2 here and -4 there.
 
Well we degreed my cams today.... they are very very close to 0 stock.... which is awesome... they might be just a coupple minutes off. one was about 20min off the other was about 5..... and there are 60min in 1 degree so we are in good shape there.... going to mess with the cam timing tomorrow.
 
Drove the car tonight, seems to have picked up a ton after 4000 rpm, but I need to deff retard the exhaust cam to move the power band back into the mid range.

1. I cant go more than 7500 rpm, because i dont have a eprom ecu.
2. I dont have an standalone ecu either.

Well, what i was thinkin is, if i cant to get the max potential of my FP2 cams (because suposely those are most powerful between 5500 to 8500), (there is about 1000 rpm im not using!!!) what do you think about move 2 marks each cam gear to advance side...I think that would move all powerband and maybe i can take more advantage of my cams...
Please i really need help because in my country there are no dynos. :cry:
Just tell me if this is a good or bad idea... :rolleyes:

Well then why don't you explain how these nice boys can look at Honduh dyno sheets and correctly set their cam gears. :rolleyes: It's not a trend, it's the right thing to do! You take them out of the box, you install them, and you set them to zero. From there you degree the cams or go to the dyno to find all of this power. There's no hidden power that can be found by using generic cam gear settings written on the box or someone elses settings.
 
If you advance both cams, you will gain bottom end. If you retard then both you will gain topend.

I retarded by exhaust side 2 degrees on the dyno, that gives me a SLIGHT better spoolup and more midrange power (when the boost first hits) to get the car moving.

If you advance the intake cam only, you will gain some mid and lowend, probly good for a smaller or stock turbo car.

I understand that, but please tell me what do you think about advance both cams on my setup? it would be useful to me?
When you say GAIN BOTTOM END it means to move whole powerband to show power sooner or just gain bottom end and lose top end power? Remember my limit is 7500 rpm.
Another question... i know to retard exhaust cam helps to turbo spool up, but it has any BAD EFECT on powerband?

Where did I say they should use any settings Jeff may have posted and use those for settings for their cams? Evil_Eagle posted that it's not worth it for a 5-10 WHP gain and they're basically good at zero, and I posted that to show what kind of gains you can see. Even the Hondas he tunes are using different settings on almost all the cars, so I didn't think anyone was going to try and use his settings for their DSM.

This is what I was refering too. "Set cam gears to zero" means don't adjust them blindly. Simple as that. You made it sound like a trend where people would kick down $200+ for pretty adjustable cam gears and just leave them at zero no matter what. When people here or on any automotive forum say leave them alone, they mean leave them alone until you can degree them or "dyno tune" them, which is solid advice.

Set cam gears to zero in the context of his post meant "set them to zero" not "adjust them when you can dyno tune them". Look at his post again. He said it's not worth it for 5-10 WHP, as in not worth it period. I know LOTS of locals who feel the same way, and even people who have cam gears believe the same thing.
