Hey guys,

I'm new to both the forum & the DSM scene. I recently purchased a Talon TSI FWD Automatic (All stock from what I can tell) from a lean sale in Sacramento. I'm almost a complete novice at working on cars but I'm willing to learn. There were some issues with the car off the bat that I've addressed myself. Now I'm stuck with an idle surge issue.

I've checked the forums & it looks like the most pervasive recommendation is that there may be a turbo boost leak. Here's what I need help with. Where can I go to get a boost leak test done?

I live in Northern California near Stockton, but I frequently visit both Sacramento & the Bay Area.

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Usually DSM owners do there own maintenance but there are some good shops and tutorials out there to get you started.

If you want to check out a shop in California I would look into road racing engineering.(duno how far away it is from you.)

A boost leak test is easy to do.. You can make the tool yourself or purchase from machv Mach V Leak Tester

check out the tutorials for more info....

If you're willing to learn how to work on cars (especially a good idea with these cars) then a boost leak test is one of the best starting points to learn on. Search in the tech articles for how to make/use your own boost leak tester. The procedure is very simple and will cost about $10 to make your tester which you'll definitely use over and over. From there the only thing you'll need is an air compressor. If you don't have one or a big enough one (my 3 gallon tank just cant keep up) then a gas station compressor works perfect as well!

Thanks for the quick responses!

I have an air compressor (I think it's a 10 gallon) at home. I'll look into putting one together & checking it out. If it doesn't turn out to be a boost leak what would you folks recommend I look into next? The idle surge only happens when in park or neutral & adjusting the BISS has little to no affect. It normally hovers around 2 to 2.5 k rpms. I can bring it down to around 1.5k if I turn on the air conditioning. As a side note I tested it with the MAFS disconnected & it idled normally but I had no power in 1st gear.

Thanks again guys!

Either make a BLT yourself or search on ebay for one and I think they are like 38 shipped just make sure you get the size you need(or buy a 4 inch and some reducing couplers so it will fit everything).... A boost leak tester is a must have if your going to own any kind of turbo car in my opinion!

Definitely do a boost leak test before anything else.

Makes sense your idle will go down with the A/C as it puts more of a load on the engine. You could have a dead/failing ISC too.. Welcome to the world of DSM's ;)

I suggest you read through the VFAQ when you have a chance: Visual Frequently Answered Questions - Home Page

There is so much info on this site regarding idle surge you could literally read about it for a week straight. Here are the results of thread title search using "Idle Surge." Look through them for a description that seems to closely match your issue and I'm sure you'll get it figured out in no time. :thumb:

So I haven't done the boost leak test yet, I just didn't have the time to go and get the parts and assemble it then test. I did have a digital Multimeter, so I tested the ISC each coil tested at 40 ohm's which I read was ok. Looks more like I may have a boost leak.

Are there any known specific areas where boost leak is known to occur? I may just try replacing all of the vacuum tubes I can see and if that doesn't fix it I'll make the BLT and look for pressure leaks.

Thanks!

Such a waste of money... You wanna replace all the hoses .. but it could be something far away from that..

For example my buddys half shaft went and banged up against the turbo.. cracked it and theyre you go.. a boost leak..

Do a boost leak and find the leak in a matter of seconds and fix it from that.

Recently I got rid of my idle surge problem by buying a FIAV Bypass Plate. Took me no more than an hour to install and viola, haven't had any surge since. Might want to try it, couldn't hurt, plus they are only like $15.
