Hi all,
I recently purchased a 91 talon with the turbo. When I drove it, I could never feel the turbo give any power and the guy said it just needed some more boost fluid. He told me to look at the guage, and when I gave it some gas, it never reached boost and he said that meant it was empty. He didn't want too much for it and it was a 5 spd (what I wanted) so I bought the car for $2300 and got it home. Well the next day I looked around forever, but could not tell where I need to fill back up the boost. I saw some lines going into the turbo, so I am pretty sure that is where it needs to go.
The only problem now is that I cannot seem to find any of the fluid at my local auto parts stores. Most of them have never heard of anything like it and one other place said they no longer carried it. Is this something I have to get at the dealer?

Anyways, if you can help please reply, I can't wait to start using the turbo again:D

I'm just going by what the previous owner told me. He said the turbo won't work until I fill up the fluid, thus the reason my boost guage would never rise above 0.

Ok what this guy did was lie too you. He probably BLEW the turbo and then sold it to some stupid unsuspecting kid (no offense but you should really exercise better judgement when buying a car)

TRhis guy sold you a POS, and will probably need a new turbo so atlest $1000 for the turbo and installation, and whatever is else is wrong with the car. Unfortunatly there is nothing legally you can do as it is a used car and Buyer BEWARE, the liability is on you my friend, that is a fact.

I would soak the car is gasoline, set a brick on the accelerator, set the car on fire, and lauch it into that guys house.

Good luck

Actually I drive a 98 Z28. My cobra was totalled :( a while back.

Anyways if you end up needing help, tools, or a head porting job (I wouldn't tackle that dohc head removal just yet if I was you ;)) just post on www.louisvillestreets.com or www.kyfbodies.org and I'll see it and reply. Or the others in this area will offer help. Lots and lots of DSM's around here.

Just becarful. It would suck to break a 599$ piece of equipment.

LOUD: listen to these guys, and take any help u can get, u can only learn more.dude, i love doing my work myself too, but i also dont hesitate to ask for guidence because i dont know nearly enough by myself. plus it always helps to have someone double check, because especialy when your doing a project involing expensive parts, u dont wana f-up, or miss obvoius stuff. it can happen. last week some might remeber a post where i smelled gas in my car and was on the verge of tearing my whole fuel system apart, when really i just spilled octane boost in the backseat (stupidstupidstupid.....).moral of the story: u want as many people there that no what there doing as possible, so u dont make costly, and sumtimes obvoius mistakes. o, and good luck with your new family member. word of advice, get used to pb+j and those little ramin noodle things.

AMEN!

Tequilla + Beer = incorrect torque wrench usage.

(i came across this thread someone posted on another forum and about cried. so i made this pic. some people....)

Boost meter quick working?
Turbo no longer turbo-ing?
You're probably out of Boost Fluid!

Then, my good sir, you have come to the right place! Feel the difference with Boost Fluid, by Royal Purple. That's right! For a meager $1.25 you can have your very own bottle of the ultra-modern, quasi-existent, fallas fluid for your turbo charged engine.

Dyno tests have repeatedly proven that each bottle inscreased horsepower by 45HP, added more than 125 foot pounds of torque, decreased drag and rotational inertia created by your rims, and eliminated that pesky fat chick that always wants a ride to the store by causing random backfires and creating toxic smoke in the passanger compartment.

Order now! (Royal Purple does not gaurantee performance, nor do they realize they sell this product)

"Turbo fluid" is not entirely a myth. I was visiting Dave Brode last fall and we were talking about turbochargers and some of the set-ups they have been used in over time.

Dave mentioned the Oldsmobile used to have a (I'm going from memory here so my details may have faded a bit) 1962 215 cu in engine that was a 1 barrel carb and a turbo. It made like 215 hp where the same 215 cu engine only made 185 hp with a 4 barrel, both engines having the same 10:1'ish compression ratio. Since the turbo under boost would detonate a 10:1 base cr motor, oldsmobile got creative and had a little tank of real high octane referred to at the time as "Rocket fuel" that was injected into the engine under boost. This "Rocket fuel" could only be purchased at the dealer and was a bit of a hassle.

When the turbo car owners would let the tank run dry the engine ran horrible under boost and they knew they needed more "Turbo fluid" or "Rocket fuel". Many of the engines blew when that tank would run dry for extended periods of time and Oldsmobile quickly removed the turbos from the cars that had them.

That is the only thing I could think of that would relate to "Turbo fluid" that was in fact real and not someone passing bs or intentionally telling a lie to sell a car. It would have to have been an older guy that previously owned or had ridden in a 1962 Olds with that rare turbo set-up though.

You should check out Majestic Turbo Inc . They quoted me around $295 to rebuild a turbo that I will be installing on my harley. They guarantee one day turnaround time and are located in Texas. So figure 3 days with shippping and handling. I would say give them a call at 1-800-231-5566. G'luck with your car and next time you buy a car, BRING A MECHANIC!!!!!!!!

and if you can't find a mechanic willing to go with ya, just take a freind that you trust and who knows his/her way around a car. If you didn't live so dang far away, I'd come help ya out, but that is a helluva drive :)

we've all been there(in some way or another) and I feel for ya. But it looks like you are making great leaps. hope it keeps up.

bad timing on the "boost fluid" add, but very well done, 'tis indeed funny.

I found the fluid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

only $20 a bottle

Has anyone recomended inspection of the Wastegate actuator before tearing the turbo off the car and assuming a rebuild is needed?

His mechanic pulled the turbo and the turbine wheel was shredded. And ,yes, to answer your question someone did recommend checking the wastegate actuator. In the end he just needed a new turbo.

OK, so at some point in the past, there was some stuff called Rocket Fuel or Turbo Fluid....does anyone think the seller drove the car the entire time he owned it and never wondered why he didn't have to fill that up, or why there wasn't a gauge indicating its fluid level.

I still vote for some nut-kicking. At the very least, he deserves a banana in the tail pipe. Or better yet, there is a security system you can buy that is nothing more than a cap for the tailpipe with a lock attached to it. Get one of these so he has to have the car towed to a mufler shop to have it cut off (can't remove it without the key).

In any case, if he had the pretensiousness to open up the turbo and declare it OK and then tell you it was the 'pop-off valve' he obvisouly deserves some sort of vengeance.

Well guys the turbocharger came today. This thing doesn't look much at all bigger than my stock turbocharger. But I hear it should bring some better power. Well it is going on tomorrow after work. Hope it all goes well.
